FLSA Status: Exempt Original Date: September 2016 Last Revision: November 2018 JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of a directing physician, manages care of athletes and the active population in community outreach settings. Uses preventative measures appropriately, provides standard immediate care procedures used in emergencies, clinical evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning. Employs appropriate assessment outcomes measures to determine effectiveness of the outreach program. Determines appropriate return to play of athletes and active population. Management of head injuries/concussions and referrals to appropriate medical professionals to ensure optimal level of care. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in athletic training from a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) program. Experience as a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer varies with each level. Experience as an athletic trainer in a high school or college setting. LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: BOC certified and licensed as a Certified Athletic Trainer the State of North Carolina. Completion of American Heart Association Healthcare Provider, which includes CPR and AED training. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Provides athletic training services for the designated college, university, high school, junior high or middle school, professional, and community outreach settings. 2. Provides athletic training services to high schools and/or community sporting events as determined necessary in order to attain departmental goals of community service. 3. Promotes safe and appropriate practice and competition. 4. Understands and uses preventative measures to ensure the highest quality of care for every patient. 5. Oversees the completion of pre-participation examinations and that required documentation is in place. 6. Assists and advises athletic team coaches in planning and instructing injury prevention programs for Student Athletes. 7. Provides standard immediate care procedures used in emergencies, independent of setting. 8. Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, parents, coaches, athletic trainers, medical personnel, and the public. 9. Performs clinical injury evaluation and assessment of patient's level of function and follows standardized clinical practice in the area of diagnostic reasoning and medical decision-making. 10. Determines appropriate therapeutic treatment and provides rehabilitation, and/or reconditioning strategies, and taping / wrapping and bracing for preventative and protective treatment. 11. Implements treatment program objectives including long and short-term goals and an appraisal of those that the patient can realistically be expected to achieve from the program. Assessment measures to determine the effectiveness of the program are incorporated into the program. 12. Collaborates with their directing physician, recommends discontinuation of the athletic training service when patient has received optimal benefit of the rehabilitation and treatment program, and notes final assessment of patient status. 13. Ensures an Emergency Action Plan be put in place and discussed with the school?s Athletic Director, coaches, and athletes; including local EMS. Performs other duties as assigned during the school year and also when the high schools are not in session. Advises on the selection, fit, function, and maintenance of athletic equipment, as needed Coordinates and instructs strength, conditioning, fitness, and sports performance enhancement programs Strong computer skills Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain competency as required for job title and the unit/area(s) of assignment Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with standards for performance improvement, organizational values, and principles for service excellence WORK ENVIRONMENT: Some night and/or weekend work required Manages a stressful work environment that includes frequent interruptions Adheres to dress code when covering events/games/matches including home and away. Athletic trainer must have WFBH logo visible when working events/games/matches.
