Job Summary

The Assistant Vice President, Laboratory Services is a regional leader who is responsible for all testing and testing-related diagnostic laboratory services to Atrium Health within Macon and Rome, Georgia Regions.  The Assistant Vice President directs the laboratory entities within the defined scope by formulating goals, establishing standards of practice, providing oversight of quality (proficiency testing, chemical hygiene, and safety programs), achieving service levels goals, providing direction for the technical operations, regulatory compliance, and accreditation programs and advancing the strategic direction for laboratory services within the region. In addition to oversight of daily operations, the Assistant Vice President, Laboratory Services is responsible for physician and nursing relations and the coordination of laboratory services with clinical programs and service lines.  

These services are provided at Atrium Health hospital laboratories, community-based health pavilions, outpatient clinics, patient service centers, private physician offices and affiliated healthcare facilities.


Essential Functions

  • Works collaboratively with facility leadership, pathologists, and nursing leadership to ensure laboratory services effectively support the clinical and safety initiatives of the system/region.
  • Collaborates & supports the regional medical director and executive director across markets to strengthen the region and/or Enterprise
  • Fosters innovation within Laboratory Services to support both current and future needs.
  • Creates an environment that fosters high teammate morale, develops leaders to excel in the laboratory.
  • Ensures all operations and policies are in accordance with all local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and accreditation requirements (CLIA, CAP, OSHA, Joint Commission, FDA and other applicable regulatory and accrediting agencies). Develops processes to ensure continual inspection readiness. 
  • Develops and monitors a comprehensive quality control & assurance program.
  • Implements systems & processes to monitor data collection, manage information systems to ensure accurate specimen collection and identification, test requesting and reporting, record keeping and retention, data retrieval and transmission, accounting, and inventory control.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors budget compliance. Analyzes laboratory fiscal needs, patient satisfaction information, and departmental performance and operating statements.
  • Ensures all laboratory operations are operating to defined standards while incorporating improvement techniques as Lean, Six Sigma for maximum quality and efficiency with teammate involvement.
  • Recruits, interviews, promotes, selects, and orients new leadership team members. Reviews and approves employment, transfers, promotions, and terminations. Develops a succession plan for Leaders.
  • Establishes and implements team member policies and practices.
  • Creates and ensures there is an adequate short- & long-term capital equipment plan.
  • Supports the Academic mission within the region as defined.
  • Confers with educators in the university and vocational/technical systems regarding training curriculum, clinical rotations for students, and team member education.
  • Confers with individuals, agencies, and trade organizations associated with delivery of laboratory and healthcare services.


Physical Requirements

Works in a busy environment; works in an area which consists of infectious materials, chemical hazards, and fire and mechanical hazards; works in an analytical, physical and managerial environment. Normal attention and use of eyes, hands and voice. Some walking, standing, sitting, talking, listening, writing and occasional lifting of light objects. Must have good visual acuity.


Education, Experience and Certifications

Medical Technologist (ASCP) preferred. Master’s Degree or 8 years’ experience in management and supervision required.
