Job Summary: 

Develops and executes a comprehensive communications agenda, strategically utilizing the President & CEO’s voice to advance enterprise communications goals and objectives across all internal and external platforms, including but not limited to coordination of internal and external messages, media relations, and social media. Responsible for all CEO speech writing, thought leadership, and messaging for internal and external constituencies to help further shape the institution’s identity and brand, as well as the CEO’s personal brand as a national healthcare leader. This position oversees a small team of executive communicators and enjoys a broad scope that requires significant interaction within and across organizational lines, particularly among senior leadership. This role is a key part of a fast-paced team that provides both proactive and reactive support to the health system at the highest levels. Confidentiality, political acumen, diplomacy, tactfulness, the ability to handle and advise on difficult situations with sensitivity, and adeptness at working in a team environment are essential attributes of this role. The AVP, Executive Communications will report to the SVP, Chief Community & Social Impact Officer, with a matrix reporting relationship to the VP, Enterprise Communications.   


Provides modern, future-focused, impactful, and strategic communications guidance, and support to the CEO. The position requires strategic thinking anchored in a deep understanding of the national healthcare landscape as well as organizational operations to build a strong communications platform with the hands-on ability to drive results. Responsibilities include developing a cohesive CEO communications strategy, project managing all CEO communications, and implementing all supporting content. 



  • Oversees the entire speech writing and communications process for the CEO, including but not limited to: project managing all CEO speaking engagements, ensuring effective speech writing aligned with CEO’s voice, interfacing with host venue representatives, assignment of work to speechwriters, sourcing content from subject matter experts, and execution of all associated deliverables such as PowerPoints, briefs or white papers.  

  • Functions as an industry thought leader by advising and counseling the CEO and the organization’s executive leadership team regarding cutting-edge, industry-leading communications strategies and tactics for the CEO. Proactively provides recommendations for messaging and communications channels. 

  • Takes the lead in producing CEO communications that effectively target internal audiences as well as external stakeholders. 

  • Quickly learns and applies the CEO’s unique voice across a range of communications and topic areas; adapts messaging to different audiences. 

  • Develops necessary content creation for written, video, digital and in-person channels including internal and external communications messages, speeches, presentations, talking points, panel discussion talking points, videos and/or video scripts, board meetings, board materials, annual reports, social media posts, opinion pieces, public letters, and other messaging materials. 

  • Verifies accuracy and appropriateness of CEO communications through internal channels by ensuring necessary review and approval clearances.  

  • Effectively collaborates with all levels across the organization including internal business leaders and their executive support staff, external stakeholders, and organizational partners. 

  • Coordinates all CEO communications in collaboration with enterprise corporate communication team to ensure cohesiveness and consistency of messaging across all internal and external channels. 

  • Stays abreast of health care industry news, trends, services, and objectives. 


Education, Experience, and Certifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Marketing/Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field. 

  • Master’s Degree in English, Marketing/Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field preferred. 

  • 10+ years of experience in corporate communications, executive communications, and/or employee communications. 

  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare and/or healthcare communications is required. 

  • Experience developing and executing executive communications programs. 

  • Exceptional oral and written communications talent and familiarity with a range of modern communications platforms, including social media. 

  • Superb writing skills, including speechwriting. Candidates should be prepared to share a portfolio of writing samples. 

  • Sophisticated understanding of the healthcare industry, health policy, national healthcare trends, healthcare operations, and the ability to synthesize these elements into cohesive thought leadership. 

  • Operates with a sense of urgency, is highly responsive, stays ahead of deadlines, and demonstrates excellent execution and follow-through. 

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to drive cross-functional deadlines consistently.
