Job Summary

The Financial Navigator functions as the central point of contact for duties of moderate complexity, judgment, and scope in coordinating and managing all aspects related to insurance benefits information, authorization, billing, and collections for all types of very complex oncology services. The Financial Navigator will serve as a resource to patients and their families, clinical staff, physicians, and insurance companies. Interviews patients who are uninsured/underinsured and determines which agencies will provide financial assistance with the patient’s hospital and medical bills. The Financial Navigator will assist the patients through the application process and follow up to make sure that the patient completes necessary financial applications in a timely manner. The Financial Navigator coordinates the collaboration between the multiple departments that are involved in getting financial assistance and closes any potential gaps to provide seamless transitions between departments. They ensure appropriate communications across multiple complex service lines, between patients/family, and within the Multidisciplinary Team. 

Essential Functions

  • Evaluates new patients with cancer for financial barriers to care and investigates insurance benefits and potential gaps of insurance coverage. Considers options to assist the patient in their financial needs.
  • Develops a financial plan with patients and their families and serves as a patient advocate during the process of their treatment.
  • Works with patients and develops resolutions to potential patient financial out-of-pocket exposure and helps them plan and overcome these obstacles.
  • Responsible for patient satisfaction and identifies potential needs with regards to financial resources such as enrollment with Foundation and Grant Assistance. Maintains records of these financial referrals to track and monitor these funds.
  • Ensures that all payor approvals are always current.
  • Referrals made to Access One, Hardship, Charity Care when appropriate.
  • Pre-screen eligible patients who need assistance with COBRA premiums.
  • Refer patients to Oncology Nurse Navigators, Social Workers, Pap Team when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate reimbursement/financial reports for each patient participating in patient assistance programs.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary consults and conferences to identify opportunities to support the complex financial needs of the patient.
  • Organizes education for the community regarding Financial Navigation and the services provided.
  • Assists with the development of policies, procedures, and standards reflective of current financial practices.
  • Reviews and remains current in the latest information on changes in financial contracts and in-network payors for the facility.
  • Serves as an advocate within the community for awareness of current trends and fluctuations within the insurance market and champions oncology resources/services. 

Physical Requirements

Works in a fast-paced office environment with numerous interruptions. This position requires some travel to represent patients at appeals.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field or 4 years of insurance-related experience required.  Must be able to work independently and possess strong organizational, time management and interpersonal skills and be able to prepare and analyze financial reports. Must be proficient with medical terminology and be familiar with clinical considerations as these relate to oncology services. Extensive analytical skills and focus on details. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.

Microsoft Excel, Word, Epic experience preferred. Databases, hospital registration, billing and clinical systems preferred.
