Overview

Job Summary

The Electron Microscopy Technician II works preparing and processing of samples for electron microscopy. He / She should be able to work independently to translate the instructions into specific tasks to assure proper completion of assigned duties. Processing of specimens must be scheduled and organized, data collected, and digital micrographs generated. The Technician II must be able to contribute ideas to enhance the work performed for research and clinical programs.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Operates the transmission electron microscope, BioWave processing unit, ultramicrotomes and other minor equipment in the laboratory.
  • Perform the grossing, processing, embedding, thin/thick sectioning of specimens and the staining of slides and grids. Checks grid quality, obtain digital images and stores them following core facility procedures and guidelines.
  • Reagent’s preparation following assigned protocols.
  • Schedule and organize clinical and research specimen processing.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong problem-solving abilities, and must work effectively in a team environment.
  • Generate digital micrographs and distribute them to pathologists and researchers.
  • Assist with ordering of supplies and maintaining proper inventories.
  • Accurately records lab data and assists in instructing new personnel in the standard operating procedures and use of core facility equipment.
  • Requires frequent use of hands for delicate manipulations, good eye to detail and common sense.
  • Requires routine walking within Cannon Research Center and to/from the Department of Pathology for specimen procurement.
  • Work in a safe manner under stressful situations.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs minor troubleshooting and repairs of equipment and procedures.
  • Requires work involving some lifting, standing, and sitting.
Physical Requirements

Works in a research laboratory environment. Exposure to biohazard material and mechanical hazards. Is responsible for working in a safe manner. Must maintain professional competence as appropriate to the area of specialization.


Education, Experience and Certifications

Bachelor's Degree required. 3 years of experience in related scientific field preferred. Prefer 2 years of hands-on laboratory experience. Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of accuracy. Possesses both motivational and interpersonal skills. Must be able to adapt to new responsibilities/frequently changing environment.  Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Certified Electron Microscopy Technician preferred. Prefer previous experience in a clinical electron microscopy lab may substitute this. Ability to calculate and formulate chemical solutions, experience with pertinent equipment, and familiarity with techniques for examining oxygen free radicals, mitochondrial function, enzymology preferred.
