This position is occupied by board certified Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants who are trained and work under the direct supervision of Gastroenterologists working for Atrium Health Gastroenterology and Hepatology Service Line.  The provider in this position will perform in person patient evaluations and medication management for adult patients over the age of 18 throughout the lifespan in the clinic setting.  The GI APP is responsible for evaluating and treating patients with acute and chronic gastrointestinal diseases.  This may include, but is not limited to, patients experiencing acute and chronic gastrointestinal and liver diseases and conditions.  

 

Essential Functions

  • Models the mission, vision, values, and standards of Excellence and the goals of the System.
  • Interviews the healthcare consumer regarding their current health or the situation. Analyzes the assessment data to determine actual or potential diagnoses, problems, and issues.
  • Performs a head-to-toe physical assessment
  • Develops a plan that prescribes strategies to attain expected, measurable outcomes.
  • Implements the identified plan, coordinates care delivery with medications, tests and procedures.
  • Evaluates progress toward attainment of goals and outcomes with plan of care
  • Practices in a manner that is congruent with cultural diversity and inclusion principles.
  • Communicates effectively with healthcare consumer and all members of the healthcare team.
  • Integrates evidence and research-based findings into practice.
  • Practices in an environmentally safe and healthy manner.
  • Practices ethically.

 

Education, Experience and Certifications

Must have or be eligible for a DEA license. Approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the state one works. Eligible for prescriptive authority application through the Board of Nursing or Medical Board in NC required. BLS for Healthcare Provider from AHA required with expiration date greater than 90 days from date of beginning practice. Demonstrates appropriate critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and the ability to prioritize and make proactive decisions.

 

  • Nurse Practitioner – Master’s Degree or Doctorate of Nursing Practice required. License to practice as a Registered Nurse required. Certification in the area of practice from a nationally recognized certifying body required. Acute Care board certification preferred based upon population and acuity served.
  • Physician Assistant – Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program required, Master’s Degree preferred. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants preferred.
