Overview

Job Summary

Collects blood samples by venipuncture and/or finger stick for laboratory analysis. Processes samples under technologist direction. Prepares laboratory related paperwork, sends tests to the appropriate reference laboratory, and reviews requisitions and forms for proper coding. May prepare patients for medical visit.



Essential Functions

  • Uses proper equipment and methods to obtain blood specimens.
  • Verifies patient name and test with requisition, and sends specimen to the appropriate reference laboratory as dictated by patient insurance.
  • Prepares patient and medical record for visit.
  • Collects and delivers specimens in a timely manner.
  • Verifies and records charges on requisition.

     

Physical Requirements

 

Works in a busy environment around physicians, technicians and other healthcare personnel. Works in an area which contains biohazardous (infectious) materials along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. Each employee has the responsibility to work in a safe manner. Standing all day. Stretching and bending required for most duties. May be required to stoop, reach, and lift light (20 pound) to moderately heavy (50 pound) loads.



Education, Experience and Certifications

High School Diploma or GED required. One year phlebotomy experience required. Certified laboratory assistant, phlebotomist, or medical assistant required. Experience with cancer or other chronically ill patient populations preferred.
