Overview

Under the supervision of the Manager of Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute Clinical Research, this person will be responsible for conducting 3D Printing biomedical engineering projects, facilities management and participation in engineering collaborative efforts and outreach for the SHVI Clinical Research Congenital Heart Disease program.



Essential Functions

  • Create 3D printed anatomically-accurate models from imaging sources such as CT, MRI, 3DRA, and 3D ultrasound
  • Maintain and operate 3D printing equipment in lab
  • Develop a working understanding of congenital heart disease and any other relevant pathologies that request the use of 3D printing technology
  • Perform segmentation (3D digital reconstruction) of medical images for 3D printing
  • Understand 3D printing’s relevance in medicine, and collaborate with physicians in finding ways to implement the technology
  • Work with business personnel in developing means to sustain the program financially
  • Use critical thinking and creativity to enable novel uses of 3D printing technology in medicine
  • Serve as an ambassador for the 3D printing program to interested clinicians, industry representatives, hospital administrators, and people in the community
  • Troubleshoot technical issues related to hardware and software in 3D lab

 

Physical Requirements
Able to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally. Position also requires some extended periods of sitting and computer usage. Periodic travel to remote sites required. 

 

Education, Experience and Certifications
MSC in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or BSC in Mechanical Engineering with 5 years of additional related experience obtained through advanced education and/or work experience required. Ability to work with a variety of sensor/instrumentation systems for data acquisition purposes. Ability to program in C++ and/or MATLAB also required. Previous experience in engineering research or product/device development preferred. Knowledge of material testing systems and common machining system preferred.
