The RN Clinical Supervisor is responsible for the direct provision of patient care and for assisting the manager with daily operations to include but not limited to coordination of patient care/outcomes, allocation of human and fiscal resources, communications, patient throughput, program development and oversight, patient, physician and teammate rounding, selection, development, and retention of team members, clinical supervision and performance appraisal, performance improvement activities, service recovery and compliance with regulatory agency requirements. The RN Clinical Supervisor maintains clinical and professional competency as appropriate to the population of patients served.
A registered nurse’s practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS LEADERSHIP/GROWTH
• Continually demonstrates and supports a Professional Practice model that allows nurses to work in
collaboration with interdisciplinary partners to achieve high quality patient outcomes.
• Incorporates the Nursing theoretical framework in defining the professional nursing practice at Atrium Health
• Supports the manager utilizing systematic approaches to enhance the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, nursing service administration and delivery of care in the department.

• Shares pertinent information with managers to promote continuity of care and open dialogue for problematic concerns.
• Coaches and counsels’ teammates and after consultation with the manager or administrative supervisor administers discipline up to and including written warnings.
• Provides peer coaching and may assist the manager in the preparation and delivery of performance appraisals.
• Supports the manager with department operations and assurance that teammates are in compliance with the Nursing Practice Act, regulatory agency standards, governing body and facility policies and procedures as defined by Atrium Health.
• Functions as a team member to accomplish goals and objectives of the department and the organization.
• Demonstrates competence in the application of principles of nursing leadership and clinical supervision.
• Assists the Manager with interview, selection, and supervision of nursing personnel in the department.
• Assists the manager as needed with coordination of communication at regular intervals throughout shifts via team meetings/huddles to exchange information/ promote dialogue with team members.
• Collaborates with manager to ensure understanding and compliance with federal and state laws, to include healthcare services and practice, while complying with all required regulations and policies.
• Assists with appropriate utilization of resources (human and fiscal) to meet patient care needs
• Rounds on patients, team members and physicians at prescribed frequencies to gain insight into patient care, teammate, and physician satisfaction and appropriateness of patient care and/or department operations.
• Evidence of rounding activities and findings are documented as are actions taken to improve care and teammate/physician engagement
• Supports and contributes to the Patient Centered Care Philosophy by understanding that every team member is a caregiver whose role is to meet the needs of the patient.
• Creates collegial relationships and coordinates nursing care with other healthcare disciplines in order to integrate services across continuum of healthcare
• Participates with performance improvement activities to improve quality of nursing care, promote patient outcomes and provide a cost-effective environment for patient care.

• Coordinates the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient/family centered care and other services
• Performs nursing care, assists with treatments, therapies, procedures, and administers medications as necessary.
• Coordinates management of patient flow/throughput in the department including all related department activities to meet specific goals as well as working with the healthcare team to facilitate timeliness of care.
• Coordinates staffing for the current and upcoming shifts through continuous assessment of volume/acuity needs utilizing resources available to assist in provision of appropriate staffing resources.
• Provides guidance and consultation to help influence identified plans/strategies, enhance abilities and effect change within the clinical environment.
• Serves as a mentor and role model to interact with and contribute to the professional development of team members.
• Collaborates with all levels of nursing team members, interdisciplinary teams, clinical leaders and others to achieve expected outcomes, meet patient care needs and engage employees.
• Supports organizational community service initiatives at unit/department level.

• Assists the manager with achieving unit/department goals including financial performance by:
Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds in handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies. Must speak and understand English fluently. Intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, and touch. Finger dexterity. Critical thinking and ability to concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in patient and / or unit/department conditions. Physical abilities testing required.
Additional department specific physical requirements may be identified for unique responsibilities within the department by the Department Manager and Human Resources representative.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
• Current RN license or temporary license as a Registered Nurse Petitioner in the state in which you work and reside or; if declaring a National License Compact (NLC) state as your primary state of residency, meet the licensure requirements in your home state; or for Non-National License Compact states, current RN license or temporary license as a Registered Nurse Petitioner required in the state where the RN works.
• Minimum two years nursing experience preferred. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
• BSN required. RN candidates for external hire or internal promotion without BSN must be enrolled in a BSN program within 1 year of Hire/Transfer date and must complete program within 3 years of enrollment in the program. Non-BSN candidates considered for hire or internal promotion must be approved by the CNE regardless of direct hierarchal reporting relationship.
• Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider status according to the American Heart Association.
• Appropriate professional certification (either clinical or leadership) is required within 1 year of eligibility for professional certification exam.
• Additional education, training, certifications, or experience may be required within the department by the nurse leader.
Non-BSN incumbents must obtain BSN by March 31, 2019 unless otherwise specified by previous facility requirements. Incumbents required to provide evidence of enrollment in a BSN program and targeted matriculation date to Nurse Manager within 1 year of being appointed to role. Professional certification (either clinical or leadership) required by March 31, 2019 or within 1 year of eligibility for professional certification exam.
