Overview

Are you a current nursing student who is passionate about providing the best care for all? Atrium Health is currently offering a Nurse Externship program for Summer 2021 designed to increase your confidence in clinical practice, time management, enhance critical thinking and clinical reasoning as well as providing you exposure to and socialization into the Atrium Health multi-disciplinary clinical practice settings. We are accepting applications from current nursing students with an expected graduation date of December 2021 or Spring 2022.

Atrium Health’s Nurse Extern program is an 8-week, paid summer externship that will run from June 1st, 2021 – July 25th, 2021. The Nurse Extern program will give you the experience engaging with patients and the inter-disciplinary team, as well as:

  • Work 1-on-1 with a trained RN preceptor and experience the role of a nurse first-hand
  • Participate in supplementary educational sessions, including clinical practice as well as career development classes such as resume building and mock interviews 
  • Work at an Atrium Health facility on an assigned unit
  • Network with Atrium Health Nursing Leadership, learn about system-wide opportunities, and take advantage of the opportunity to shadow to enhance your externship experience 


To qualify for the Nurse Extern program you must be:

  • Currently in good standing in Registered Nurse academic program
  • Have completed your junior year, or equivalent, at the start of the Nurse Extern program
  • Be able to be certified as NA II with NC Board of Nursing and NA I with DFS Nurse Aide Registry by the start date of the program June 1st
  • Possess a current American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support HealthCare Provider certification.

The Nurse Extern assists in providing patient care under the direct supervision and control of the Registered Nurse. Assists in maintaining a clean, safe patient environment and performs job responsibilities in a safe manner. Maintains clinical and professional competencies as appropriate to the needs of the patient population served.

Essential Functions

  • Supports patients/residents with activities of daily living.
  • Assists patients/residents with personal hygiene.
  • Takes vital signs and height and weight measurements.
  • Feeds and ambulates patients/residents according to specific procedures.
  • Maintains patient/resident's rooms in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Observes and reports changes in patient/resident conditions.
  • Orients patients/families to unit and instructs patient on safety measures.
  • Assists with clerical work such as, including answering phones, entering data and maintaining medical records.
  • Maintains stock supply items in inventory management.
  • Performs duties as outlined in the scope of Nurse Aide II (per North Carolina Board of Nursing Nurse Aide II Tasks List).
  • Perform technical tasks with appropriate training such as administering a 12- Lead Electrocardiogram test and routine venipuncture.

 

Physical Requirements
Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stretching, stooping, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds in handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies. Must speak and understand English in good understandable terms. Must have manual and finger dexterity. Physical abilities testing required.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Currently in good standing in a Registered Nurse academic program
  • Completion of Junior year or equivalent at the time of the Nurse Extern Program
  • Current listing with the DFS Nurse Aide Registry as a Nurse Aide I prior to start date
  • Current listing with the NC Board of Nursing as a Nurse Aide II prior to start date
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support HealthCare Provider certification.
