Overview

The Clinical Nursing Supervisor facilitates daily nursing care to patients from birth through the lifecycle, assists 
with overall unit compliance with JCAHO standards and collaborates with physicians and other members of the 
healthcare team to best meet patient clinical needs.
The Clinical Nursing Supervisor in General Surgical Nursing supports the objectives of the Director of Medical 
 

Surgical Nursing and is responsible for the clinical management and day to day operations of the unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
• EDUCATION REQUIRED
• Graduate of an accredited school of Professional Nursing
• EDUCATION PREFERRED
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing
• LICENSURES OR CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED
• Valid, active unencumbered Nursing license approved by the Georgia Licensing Board for GA locations 
and Alabama Licensing Board for AL locations
• BLS certification
• LICENSURES OR CERTIFICATIONS PREFERRED
• ACLS certification
• Certification in related specialty
• EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
• Progressive leadership
• Administrative and clinical competencies
• EXPERIENCE PREFERRED
• 2 years operating room experience
 

ROLE SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Quality Patient Care
• Participates in performance improvement activities as assigned.
• Participates in continuous quality improvement activities within the hospital and/or nursing unit.
• Directs patient care and follows existing protocols and policies.
• Makes daily rounds on the unit to ensure compliance environment of care guidelines.
• Assures that staff are compliant with hourly rounding, whiteboard use and bedside shift report and 
coaches when necessary.
2. Unit Staffing
• Assesses department for appropriate staffing per shift to include staff to patient ratios, sends staff home 
in low census.
• Monitors daily staffing compliance within staffing guidelines.
• Ensures staff assignments are appropriate for skill level and certifications.
3. Unit Specific Education
• Conducts learning needs assessments through peer input, physician requests and observing skill levels 
within the unit, provides information to clinical educator and develops education materials.
• Facilitates new employee unit-specific orientation by acting as a preceptor, coordinates orientation 
schedules and facilitates employee competencies compliance.
• Assists with completion of unit-specific competencies and other annual education.
4. Unit Specific Data
• Collects Performance Improvement data relative to unit and nursing service.
• Collects other data as necessary relative to the development of the unit/service line.
• Reviews charts as necessary to assure compliance with Joint Commission standards and other 
regulatory issues under the auspices of the Clinical Manager.
• Monitors nursing documentation via ongoing chart audits (discharge planning, admission assessments, 
valuables checklist, etc.) for completion.
• Participates in Lean Six Sigma initiatives as directed.
• Participates in Operational Rounding and A3 Process.
5. Projects and Reports
• Completes data collections within defined timeframe and submits to appropriate individual.
• Facilitates ordering supplies to assure unit always has necessary items.
• Maintains equipment usage by contacting Biomed or maintenance for necessary repairs.
6. Nursing Care
• Completes Leader Rounds on patients daily and resolves patient concerns/complaints as appropriate.
• Maintains open lines of communication and effective working relationship with physicians.
• Observes patient care practices in the unit and develops/implements action plans to Improve and refine.
• Provides administrative coverage for the clinical manager/director during absence as needed.
• Rounds with providers to discuss patient progression.
• Leads SNAP Huddles on each nursing unit to anticipate, discharge and help remove barriers.
• Escalates barriers to discharge as needed.
• Communicates with patient and family about plan of care and discharge goals.
• Holds the care team accountable for meeting the patient’s anticipated date of discharge.
7. Safety and Security
• Conducts safety/control check on unit equipment, i.e. crash carts, refrigerators, blood glucose monitors, 
and narcotic count.
• Adheres to principles of infection control when performing patient care.
• Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patient, family, and facility staff.
8. Professional Development
• Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
• Attends at least 75% staff meetings; reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.
• Actively participates in the department’s continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
• Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility as well as the focus statement of the 
department.
9. Continuing Education
• Completes electronic medical record competency within 90 days
• Completes unit and departmental annual skills validations
• Completes competency checklist within 90 days
