Explore an exciting opportunity with AHWFB Cardiothoracic Surgery Department as we eagerly welcome a skilled Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our dynamic Ambulatory/ Inpatient team in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

What You’ll Do: 

Work as part of a Cardiothoracic Surgery team to improve outcomes for surgical patients in a dynamic, academic practice.  In this role, you will work alongside attending surgeons, other surgery APPs, and surgery nurses and staff.  Though APPs in this role will collaborate with other providers, autonomy is both encouraged and fostered. As a valued member of our healthcare team, the PA/ACNP will play a key role in team-focused patient care, conducting thorough examinations and evaluations in a clinic setting. Responsibilities include:

  1. The Clinic APP will see new Cardiothoracic and post-operative patients in the clinical setting. Complete all documentation, including STS data collection, as required per patient evaluation. Evaluate images, labs and test. Provide comprehensive patient education. 
  2. Perform wound evaluations and treatments, including wound vac changes and superficial wound closure.
  3. Responds to incoming patient related phone calls.
  4. Completes short and long term disability forms.
  5. During non-clinic hours, assist the Surgeons and Fellows with device removals in the CVICU. 
  6. During non-clinic hours, work with Floor APPs with discharge summaries, transfer admissions and wound vac changes.
  7. Utilize EMR to efficiently document all assessments and communications.
  8. Procedural skills per department or practice guidelines.
  9. Opportunity to participate in basic science and clinical research projects

  12. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

The clinician functions under the regulatory mandate from their respective licensing organization (North Carolina Medical Board or North Carolina Board of Nursing) with departmental specific credentialing from the institution.

Physician Assistant (PA) Requirements: 

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program; Master's Degree preferred
  • Current North Carolina Medical Board Medical License, Certified by NCCPA
  • APP post-graduate experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology, or Surgery preferred.
  • Current American Heart Assoc. BLS and ACLS certification

Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) Requirements:

  • Graduation from accredited Nurse Practitioner Master's Program, Master’s degree or higher required
  • Current North Carolina Board of Nursing Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner license
  • Board certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner by AANP or ANCC
  • APP post-graduate experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology, or Surgery preferred.
  • Current American Heart Assoc. BLS and ACLS certification
