• Department: Inpatient Phlebotomy

Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED 
• Certification from an accredited phlebotomy training program that includes:
  • ASCP, AMT, ASPT or equivalent certification
  • Completion of a certification exam with passing scores
• CPR Certification  
• Two years phlebotomy experience in the home department required.

The Successful Candidate will assume responsibility for a variety of functions, which include, but are not limited to:

• Assures accurate and timely collection of blood specimens, according to departmental practices. 
• Assures accurate identification and delivery of patient samples to appropriate lab sections. 
• Follows proper safety and identification procedures when dealing with patients and/or specimens under any circumstance or environment. 
• Demonstrates advanced knowledge of phlebotomy by serving as a willing resource to staff and applying knowledge in daily routines. 
• Improves work skills through self-study and continuing education. 6. Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the section and department. 
• Protects self, coworkers and facility by following approval policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases. 
• Exhibits and promotes the professional image of laboratories in accordance with hospital, department, and professional society philosophies, goals and standards of laboratory testing. 
• May be required to function as group leader for other Phlebotomy Techs. 
• Provides age appropriate specimen collection in accordance with age specific guidelines for neonates, school age, adolescents, early adults, middle adults and/or late adults on a daily basis 
• Demonstrates the ability to work independently without direct supervision. 
• Demonstrates the ability to support the shift Coordinators by assuming additional duties as needed. 
• Adheres to the general Medical Center standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.

Work Environment: 

• Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens or patients. 
• Exposed to risk of bloodborne/airborne disease. 
• Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection). 
• May be exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens. 
• Subject to injury from sharps. 
• May require judgment/action which could result in death of patient.
