Overview
JOB SUMMARY
This position involves routine and special procedures with nonhuman primates (NHPs). Under general supervision, the employee will implement previously developed and original experimental procedures in a research laboratory as needed to accomplish the studies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Research Technical Functions (prior veterinary and/or NHP experience preferred)
- This position will be located at the Clarkson Campus working with nonhuman primates.
- Good interpersonal skills and collaborative teamwork are required.
- Experience with primate or other animal research is desirable, and a patient and gentle approach to animal work.
- Prepare animals for surgical and medical procedures; including, clipping and disinfecting surgical sites; administrations of sedatives and anesthesia; monitoring anesthesia; recover animals from anesthesia.
- Calculate and prepare drug dosages and maintain controlled drug log.
- Blood and specimen collection for evaluation.
- Provide animal restraint during examinations and treatment.
- Work with ARP staff to coordinate animal care, feeding and transportation logistics.
- Assist with animal necropsies.
- Monitor the health of animals on study; health monitoring includes weekend observations.
- Gross trimming for pathology of fixed tissues.
- Rotating weekend work.
- Creating animal enrichment, washing containers, cleaning the lab.
Research Data Functions
- Careful recordkeeping and data tracking will be necessary.
- Basic computer skills are needed including online time reporting and data entry and proofreading.
- Follow and provide input into development of standard operating procedures and other documents as necessary.
- Work in compliance with local and federal requirements such as the Animal Care and Use Committee, Environmental Health and Safety and Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.
Research Operational and Facility Functions
- Prepare operating rooms and other facilities for surgery or study procedures, scheduled tests, experiments and/or operations.
- Assist with the maintenance and calibration of equipment.
- Assist with inventory and ordering of supplies, medications and other drugs.
- Cleaning and sterilizing instruments.

- Research laboratory environment
- Frequent exposure to diseases, medicinal preparations and other conditions common in a lab environment
- Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection)
