Overview

The Department of Anesthesiology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the next Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs. The role of the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs will involve creating an inclusive environment that enables our faculty to reach their academic goals by developing their careers through greater engagement, mentorship, and coaching. The successful candidate will demonstrate integrity, strong leadership skills, emotional intelligence, empathy, and cultural awareness to help foster an environment of success for the long-term recruitment and retention of our faculty. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Faculty Development

  • Assess development needs across the full spectrum of faculty and meet with new faculty recruits to ensure a smooth onboarding process while determining development needs.
  • Create new and enhance existing faculty development programs to support ongoing growth.
  • Design and implement innovative development programs tailored to the evolving needs of faculty, ensuring a continuous path of professional growth and achievement.
  • Customize development programs based on career stages, including junior, mid-career, and senior faculty. Programs for senior or mid-career faculty will include executive coaching and mentorship development.
  • Ensure a robust mentorship program in which all faculty below the rank of professor have a defined mentor and track engagement effectively.
  • Lead initiatives to cultivate leadership skills among faculty, focusing on strategic thinking, effective communication, and decision-making.
  • Develop comprehensive skills training programs to enhance professional competencies, such as scientific writing, grant writing, mentorship, and presentation skills.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

  • Collaborate with the Vice Chair for Community and Belonging to ensure alignment of goals regarding equity in recruitment, bias training for faculty, and development of underrepresented in medicine (URM) faculty.
  • Recommend URM faculty for recognition or participation in WFUSM awards and programs.

Professionalism

  • Address issues related to professional conduct and work with faculty to uphold the highest standards of ethical and professional behavior in alignment with WFSUM and AHWFB policies and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with department leadership to manage professionalism concerns among faculty.
  • Report professionalism concerns to appropriate WFSUM/AHWFB regulatory entities.
  • Develop and implement strategies for effective conflict management within the department.
  • Foster a collegial environment where disagreements are resolved constructively and collaboratively.

 Departmental Environment

  • Champion an environment of professionalism, respect, and inclusivity.
  • Advise faculty on institutional resources available for managing stress and enhancing resilience.
  • Assess departmental culture through internal surveys and coordinate responses to institutional culture surveys, ensuring maximal participation that generates actionable data.

 Faculty Affairs

  • Chair the Departmental Promotion and Tenure (P&T) Committee to engage with WFSUM P&T processes.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty regarding the P&T process and advise on readiness for promotion.
  • Meet annually with section chiefs to discuss career development and P&T concerns for all department faculty prior to the annual review with the chair.
  • Develop analytics to monitor the consistency and equity of departmental P&T processes.

 Liaison Responsibilities

  • Serve as the liaison between the department and the WFUSM Office of Faculty Affairs and the P&T committee.
  • Communicate with AHWFB HR personnel on faculty-related issues.

QUALIFICIATIONS

  • M.D or D.O currently at the rank of associate professor or professor. 
  • Board eligible or board certified in Anesthesiology or allied field. 
  • Eligibility for licensure in the state of North Carolina. 
  • Strong collaborative skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
