Overview

JOB SUMMARY: 
The Staff Scientist collaborates independently with principal investigators researchers in designing and implementing studies, analyzing data, and publishing results from research projects.  Assume primary responsibility for writing statistical design, methods, and analysis for research proposals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Collaborates with principal investigators and assists in developing objectives, designing sampling, randomization and data collection procedures to achieve study objectives. 
  • Writes statistical computer programs and reviews computer output for consistency and quality. 
  • Analyzes data and prepares tables and figures for interim and final reports including grant applications and peer-reviewed publications. 
  • Writes the results section of reports and publications. 
  • Designs statistical analyses and report generation procedures for specific research studies and writes statistical methods and results sections of reports and publications.
  • Develops the statistical design and planned analyses for research grant proposals and takes primary responsibility for writing the statistical design, including sample size, and statistical considerations in grant proposals. 
  • Assumes major responsibilities in research projects, e.g. serving on committees, supervision of project personnel, coordination of quality control efforts, serving on writing teams, and preparing scientific manuscripts/abstracts including primary authorship of research papers. 
  • Develops and implements new innovative procedures in the areas of data collection, quality control, presentation of results, and statistical analyses. 
  • Presents at professional/scientific meetings, workshops, and seminar series.
  • Supervises the work of undergraduate and graduate student research assistants, Research Technicians I-IV, Biostatisticians I-III and analysts/programmers serving on the same projects.
  • Trains and provides guidance to technicians, interns, and researchers in specialized procedures, use of equipment, and theoretical basis of unique tests. 
  • Functions as a lead resource for associate staff scientists, technicians, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students. 
  • Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Terminal doctoral degree in related scientific areas with five years’ experience as an Associate Staff Scientist or equivalent professional experience at a similar location.

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to organize data and communicate statistical concepts to non-statisticians.
  • Ability to write statistical considerations for grant proposals.

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with R, Python, MatLab and Typescript
