Ophthalmic Assistant, Full Time, Days

Ophthalmic Assistant provides preliminary screening exam and ophthalmic diagnostic tests under the direct supervision of an ophthalmologist/optometrist providing pertinent information needed for ophthalmic exam and care of the patient.

MUST HAVE: 

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • CPR certification (American Heart Association OR American Red Cross) required. 
  • One year work experience, preferably in an eye-related field. 

NICE TO HAVE: 

  • Previous work experience in ophthalmology preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs preliminary screenings as ordered via physician including but not limited to providing detailed patient medical/ocular histories, obtaining visual acuity, tonometry, lensometry, pupil exam, instilling ocular medication, and visual field testing. 
  • Maintains assigned ophthalmic exam lanes/equipment in clinic. Cleans ophthalmic equipment in exam rooms according to guidelines. Maintains physical environment of exam rooms. 
  • Ensures exam room/lane are stocked appropriately. 
  • Interacts with patients/families, coworkers, and physicians in professional courteous manner always. Always maintain patient confidentiality. Always contributes to the positive atmosphere of the workplace. 
  • Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, required continuing education hours to maintain certification according to JCAHPO guidelines. Maintains current CPR certification during employment. 
  • Under the direction of the physician may perform prescription refill following standard guidelines. 
  • Demonstrates dedication to patient service and care by serving as a role model in always delivering quality patient care. 
  • Performs other job duties incidental to the work described here in and based on Certification level.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Computer skills, work experience with Electronic Medical Record preferred.
  • Solid understanding of ophthalmic practice and care of ophthalmic patients.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic instrumentation.
  • Proficient in basic preliminary ophthalmic testing according to certification COA.
  • Ability to multitask with efficiency. 
  • Understands the need for efficient use of time.
  • Ability to recognize common safety hazards and take precautions to establish a safe work surrounding.
  • Ability to withstand long periods of standing and walking.
  • Focused and organized, always working as a team player.
