Overview

The Assistant Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Network Hospitals manages operational finance responsibility for High Point Medical Center, Lexington Medical Center, and Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Affiliates of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Health with over $650 million in annual revenues. Oversees a small team of analysts and one Director in carrying out day-to-day financial activities. Maintains personal and professional credibility and integrity and maintains respect and confidence throughout the System. This position has a dual reporting relationship with a direct reporting relationship to the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist CFO and an indirect relationship to the Presidents of High Point, Lexington, and Wilkes Medical Centers, respectively. 

Essential Functions

Strategic 

1. Partners with the WFB CFO and hospital Presidents to develop, gain approval, and execute a sustainable long-term financial strategy that supports the System's and HP, Lexington, and Wilkes mission, vision, values and execution of their respective strategic plans. 

2. Leads business financial planning analysis on new business opportunities. 

3. Works with accountable executives to appropriately integrate campuses into System Service Line strategy (driving 'Systemness').

 

Operational 

1. Responsible for all aspects of operational finance at HP, Lexington and Wilkes, including working with accountable executives to drive operational efficiencies, preparing and monitoring budgets, developing and applying policy, and presenting to the Board of Directors. 

2. Provides oversight and direction to analysts and Director. 

3. Connects WFB Finance functions to hospitals in a meaningful and strategic way: financial services, corporate revenue cycle, accounts payable, financial planning, financial and operational decision support and cost accounting. 

4. Coordinates with WFB Finance Division to support the completion of: 

a. Timely preparation and filing of federal, state, hospital association and other third party financial reports, as required. 

b. Management of the external audit engagement and timely reporting of the findings to the Finance Committee or all applicable committees. 

c. Preparation of financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). 

d. Collaborates with Human Resources and Accounting to assure payroll accuracy and labor reporting. 

e. Provides timely analysis to support decision-making, recommend initiatives to optimize performance, and assist in execution of operational and strategic initiatives. 

 

 Leadership 

1. Leads network hospitals’ leaders through establishment of performance goals and allocation of resources. 

2. Actively supports development of financial knowledge and acumen of leaders including translation of financial information in meaningful ways. 

3. Works in partnership with Service Line executives to drive programmatic growth and integration. 

 

Governance 

1. Leads Finance or all Committee meetings including planning and presentation and coordination with committee chair, WFB CFO and network hospital Presidents. (again, finance committees are not universal)

2. Attends the Board of Directors meetings for all network hospitals and reports as needed. 

3. Attends Hospital Foundation meetings and reports out as needed.

 

Development & Community Affiliations 

1. Maintains professional growth and development through conferences and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest industry trends. 

2. Attends and serves on professional/civic service organizations as a health system and industry representative. 

 

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Master's degree in Business (MBA) or Master's degree in Health Administration (MHA) required. Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or Business required. 
  • Ten years' experience with three years as a senior financial executive in a health care system, major complex medical center or national health care consulting firm.
