Overview

JOB SUMMARY

WFIRM is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Tech III researcher with animal experience to develop medical countermeasures for the physiological effects of chemical injury. Incumbents will assist with animal research, including animal handling, clinical assessments and ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations. This is a collaborative research program, so incumbents will be expected to work with and educate diverse personnel. Under general supervision, the incumbent will oversee and conduct biological studies that require the use of independent judgment in the planning, modification, and performance of research laboratory procedures. As research team member, the incumbent will provide planning assistance, guidance and support to the research team staff. After training in various in vitro methods, the incumbent will train and assist educational fellows and other team members in techniques and execution of research studies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Executes physiological and biological studies in vitro.
  2. Consults with principal investigator and assists in the development of plans for research experiments and data collection procedures.
  3. Modifies existing laboratory procedures and protocols to meet the needs of research projects as required.
  4. Reviews scientific journals, abstracts and other related literature for information concerning experimental procedures and supplemental support information. Organizes information for use in applicable research projects.
  5. Works with animal models ranging from rodents to rabbits and higher species.
  6. Supervises, trains, and reviews the work of students and other technicians engaged in research laboratory work.
  7. Operates complex specialized laboratory instruments and instructs other personnel in the use and operations of these instruments.
  8. Ensures quality data collection to maximize reproducibility.
  9. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient at animal handling, manipulation and husbandry
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively
  • Can productively work within a team
  • Detail oriented and proficient with standard spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of MS Office and scientific statistical/graphing software
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and universal precautions to establish a safe work environment

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Research laboratory environment
  • Frequent exposure to diseases, medicinal preparations and other conditions common in a lab environment
  • Exposure to glass and other breakable objects
  • Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection)
