Overview

Job Summary 

The Pharmacy Technician I assists the registered pharmacists in performing a variety of technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of drugs. The duties require knowledge of and skills in various oral and intravenous dosage forms. Duties are performed under the supervision of a registered pharmacist and will vary depending on area assignment. 

 

Essential Functions 

Independently motivated to produce high-quality work by staying on task and remaining cognizant of turn around times. 

Answers and screens telephone calls when appropriate. Receives information and refers calls to a pharmacist. 

Communicates problems and alerts appropriate supervisory staff. 

Seeks ways to minimize waste and reduce cost. 

Alerts appropriate pharmacy personnel concerning drug shortages and problems (i.e. outdated drugs, damaged packaging, etc.).   Monitors medication inventory levels and notifies appropriate staff of unusual usage or when levels are low. 

Repackages medications as necessary. 

Measures liquid aliquots with oral dosage units. 

Properly labels medication per department work instructions.   Attaches ancillary labeling to medications requiring special instructions. 

Delivers medications to nursing units and removes expired/discontinued medications. Fills and delivers floor stock requests after appropriate pharmacist checks. Fills automated dispensing machines. Delivers and stores medications per ancillary labeling 

Fills emergency boxes, trays and kits. 

Operates medication carousel independently and problem solves as appropriate. 

Performs other duties as assigned. 

 

Education, Training, and Experience 

High school diploma or GED required.

Must be registered with the GA Board of Pharmacy prior to start date and must renew registration every two years.
