Overview

JOB SUMMARY:  The Control Desk Specialist is responsible for sending for patients, scheduling and posting add-on/emergent cases, serving as an administrative resource including responding to multiple internal and external calls.  Ensures that all contacts with patients, staff, physicians, and all customers are conducted in a professional, courteous, helpful and considerate manner. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  High School diploma required. Healthcare related associate or bachelor's degree desirable. Work experience in a hospital procedural setting preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Responsible for sending for patients, communicating with the nursing unit to determine the mode of transportation to the Procedure Room, and contacting the transporter to transport the patient to the Procedure Room.
  2. Handles multiple phone calls related to scheduling and posting add-on and emergent cases from residents/surgeons, as well as general questions from other departments.
  3. Maintains detailed transportation tracking records.
  4. Coordinates supply needs for Procedure Rooms and Labor & Delivery.
  5. Responsible for contacting the Surgical Services Scheduling Center in regards to case cancellations for current day and for the next day, as well as communicating with them about any cases that were cancelled during the night.
  6. Communicates with Clinical Coordinators regarding specific case needs or requests and assists the Charge Nurse in making sure the daily schedule runs efficiently by reporting any changes and additions to the schedule.
  7. Responsible for printing pick lists and patient stickers when requested.
  8. Monitors and coordinates Procedure Room access and scrub access for third party vendors.
  9. Communicates courteously, promptly and appropriately to patients, family members and health care providers strictly adhering to HIPPA guidelines.
  10. Communicates with the Emergency Department and all areas of The Birth Center to obtain patient and surgeon data when emergent OB/GYN cases arise.
