Overview

JOB SUMMARY: 

Promotes quality, age appropriate patient care in collaboration with the Manager- Inpatient PACU, Director of Nurse Anesthesia and PACU, and Medical Director of Inpatient PACU. Assists the Manager-Inpatient PACU by maintaining responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Inpatient PACU including safe, appropriate patient placement and assignment of staff members to deliver direct patient care, facilitating the flow of patients to and from the PACU, evaluation of daily staffing needs and participation in the performance evaluation process for RNs and support staff. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with one year PACU experience. 
  • BSN degree required. 
  • Extensive experience in critical care or PACU setting. 
  • One year previous supervisory experience preferred. 

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: 

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of North Carolina 
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required. 
  • Certification in specialty required within one year of hire. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Communicates and collaborates with the Manager, Director Nurse Anesthesia & PACU regarding departmental philosophy, goals, support needs and standards of care to ensure the highest quality of age appropriate patient care is provided. 
  • Directs and evaluates the activities of the clinical PACU staff. 
  • Promotes and facilitates the professional growth of staff members. 
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and mediates daily workflow utilizing management principles and strategies.
  • Ensures that age/developmentally appropriate patient care is provided for the age groups served. 

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Demonstrates clinical knowledge in human growth and development when appropriate 
  • Excellent and effective written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to work effectively with the team 
  • Functions effectively under stressful and difficult situations 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

  • Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances 
  • Fast-paced, high stress, frequently noisy 
  • Requires judgment to respond to emergencies in a wide variety of circumstances 
  • Subject to many interruptions, pressure related to multiple calls and inquiries
  • Occasionally subject to irregular hours 
  • Occasionally handles absentee replacement on short notice Requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
