Overview
JOB SUMMARY: Experienced Registered Nurse, critical to the facilitation of inbound patient transfers from outside hospitals. Requires critical thinking skills, an operational knowledge of the services provided by the Medical Center, and the ability to act as a liaison between the Medical Center and referring hospitals. Responsibilities include facilitating appropriate placement of patients by planning, coordinating, and expediting patient throughput. This position utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to collaborate successfully with medical staff, hospital employees and referring physicians. This position is severe weather critical. The department is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year - this position may require working a flexible schedule including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as well as during inclement weather.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing required. BSN with three years medical -surgical hospital, emergency room and/ or critical care experience preferred. Previous experience in a call center preferred.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Registered Nurse licensure from the State of North Carolina Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 1 year of hire for Adult Critical Care, Adult ED Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 1 year of hire for Network ED, Peds ED, PICU and NICU, and other areas per unit guidelines
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Adheres to general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building. 2. Serves as the liaison between the medical staff of the referring facility and the medical staff of WFBH to ensure a smooth inbound patient transfer process. 3. Provides guidance as needed to referring facilities as to the most appropriate service or medical specialty to address the patient medical needs. 4. Interacts with Patient Logistics staff to ensure appropriate and timely placement of patients accepted for transfer to the Medical Center. 5. Contacts the nursing staff at the referring facility to gather updated clinical information prior to patient transfer to ensure that the patient has not had significant clinical findings or changes and to ensure that the intended nursing unit location is still appropriate. 6. Interacts with the Financial Clearance Center staff to ensure that insurance verification and pre-certification are performed on patients prior to transfer as appropriate. 7. Interacts with coworkers in an effective, positive and professional manner to encourage a cohesive work environment. 8. Develops and maintains effective processes and documentation in information systems to facilitate efficient and appropriate admissions. 9. Demonstrates responsibility for professional and personal development.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: Excellent customer service skills Experience in multidisciplinary team collaboration Excellent telephone speaking voice and listening skills Excellent knowledge of the nursing process and critical thinking skills Basic computer skills with ability to navigate within multiple screens comfortably. Typing speed of 35 wpm minimum. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work within a fast paced environment
