Overview

FUNCTION OF JOB

Provide bioinformatic support for a variety of research projects under the supervision of senior bioinformaticians and BISR faculty, and collaborate in designing and implementing bioinformatic tools.

CHARACTERISTIC WORK

  1. Provide bioinformatics support for faculty and staff in biostatistics and bioinformatics.
  2. Collaborate with cancer center investigators and assist in developing genomics, proteomics, imaging, and other related quantitatively oriented studies that promote advanced scientific research through innovative data handling, data analysis, and data processing pipeline and visualization methods.
  3. Design and develop bioinformatics analysis and visualization software tools and web applications.
     
  4. Demonstrate basic knowledge in the following areas: data visualization software, web application development for data intensive problems, web services development and deployment, performance tuning or high-performance applications, or bioinformatics software development.
  5. Develop and apply computational algorithms to biomedical studies using genomic, proteomic, expression, imaging and other related data. Examples include, but are not limited to classical statistical methods, machine learning, vector support analysis, neural networks, and regression trees.
  6. Perform timely and accurate bioinformatics analysis to aid researchers in high throughput data analysis. Maintain, support, and document shared tools, web pages, and data sets for computational analysis. Assist in the development and maintenance of relational database for storing data and analysis results. Work with researchers to define and implement bioinformatics analysis tools.
  7. Assist in advance analyses under the supervision of faculty and senior biostatisticians and bioinformaticians.
  8. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master's degree in bioinformatics, mathematics, biomathematics, computer science, engineering, or related scientific discipline.
  2. Experience in software development and database development.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  4. Familiarity with resources and tools relevant to research in genomics, proteomics, imaging, bioinformatics, and related disciplines.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. An understanding of the fundamentals of modern biology and bioinformatics.
  2. Experience in computer programming (Java, Perl, Python, R) and database programming.
  3. Knowledge of biology especially cancer biology, statistics and experience conducting statistical analysis.
  4. Experience with bioinformatic tools and public databases.
