Overview

JOB SUMMARY: 

Under general supervision, provides prenatal genetic counseling, pediatric and adult genetic counseling, and teratogen counseling services. Coordinates the maternal serum screening program and provides teaching and outreach services. Participates in management and coordination of clinical research studies. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 

Master's degree in Human or Medical Genetics. 

Experience conducting clinical research trials. 

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: 

Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counseling. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

1. Works with patients and families dealing with genetic conditions. Provides comprehensive information, diagnostic services and interpretation of clinical/laboratory findings, and psychosocial counseling in pediatrics, obstetrics, and maternal serum screening program. 

2. Identifies and discusses the psychosocial needs of the patients and families; makes appropriate referrals when necessary. 

3. Insures that patient is informed of and understands the risks, benefits, and limitations of available testing. 

4. Collaborates with physicians and other health care providers to plan, develop, budget, implement, coordinate, manage, monitor and evaluate patient care protocols for clinical programs and/or clinical research studies. 

5. Participates in data collection, preparation of progress reports and quality control monitoring, analysis of data and the writing of scientific papers, and the publication of articles, book chapters, etc. 

6. Conducts education programs for physicians, medical students, other health professionals, agencies, and the general community. Acts as preceptor to genetics counseling graduate students. 

7. Monitors and integrates new technologies, theories and resources into patient care, project design, education programs and program development. 

8. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
