Cabarrus College of Health Sciences is a private college for healthcare professions[1] on the campus of Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord, North Carolina. It is affiliated with Atrium Health,[2] a hospital network with more than 70,000 employees and 1,400 care locations, and since its merger with Advocate Aurora Health in 2022, part of Advocate Health. The college offers 18 degrees in 11 health science disciplines, with a mix of on-campus, online, and hybrid programs.

Job Summary

The Program Chair for General Education provides academic and administrative leadership to the general education program, ensuring its alignment with institutional goals and accreditation standards. The Chair fosters an environment conducive to learning, teaching, and faculty collaboration while contributing to curriculum development, assessment, and continuous improvement of general education. This role includes teaching responsibilities and collaboration with various departments to enhance student success in both general and specialized health science disciplines.

Essential Functions

Program Leadership & Management

  • Lead the recruitment, supervision, and evaluation of general education faculty, fostering a collaborative and supportive teaching environment.
  • Develop and implement curriculum aligned with institutional and accrediting body requirements, ensuring continuous assessment and improvement.
  • Oversee scheduling and workload assignments to optimize faculty effectiveness and student learning.
  • Collaborate with health science departments to ensure the general education curriculum complements specialized training.
  • Conduct regular faculty meetings and performance appraisals, ensuring development plans are created and followed.

Student & Program Assessment

  • Lead student and program assessment initiatives to monitor and improve learning outcomes, using data-driven approaches for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards through ongoing evaluation and preparation for accreditation reviews.
  • Maintain program records such as course portfolios, graduate surveys, and employer feedback.

Resource Management & Budgeting

  • Manage the general education department budget, prioritizing spending to support student learning and program resources.
  • Ensure acquisition and maintenance of necessary resources (e.g., books, lab equipment, technology) to enhance the general education program.

Teaching

  • Provide instruction in general education courses (preferably the social sciences including psychology and sociology) and maintain high standards in teaching by incorporating innovative learning strategies, including hybrid models and technology integration.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for subject matter, challenge students to think critically, and foster awareness of cultural diversity.

Accreditation & Compliance

  • Lead the program's accreditation efforts, ensuring compliance with accrediting bodies and preparing necessary documentation.
  • Engage in continuous evaluation to maintain program quality and compliance with institutional standards.

  1. Unofficial Transcript: Candidates must submit an unofficial transcript which should include a minimum of18 graduate hours in their teaching discipline, with preference given to social sciences.

Physical Requirements

Requires knowledge regarding teaching discipline and ability to verbalize that knowledge in a presentation in a classroom. Mobility needed to access classrooms and offices within the school. Responsible for working in a safe manner.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Master's Degree with at least 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline (preferably the social sciences including PSY and SOC) and previous teaching experience at the college level required. Management skills preferred.
