Overview
Job Summary
Under the direction and general supervision of the Registered Nurse-Telemetry Unit or Nurse Manager and possibly under the guidance of the Senior Monitor Technician provides continuous monitoring of patient EKG patterns. Performs clinical duties associated with the monitoring responsibilities. May assist in the training, orientation and guidance of other personnel relating to telemetry. Also, may be responsible for performing 12-lead EKGs, Events, Holters, and Mobile Cardiac Telemetry (MCTs) and associated responsibilities. May assist in the training, orientation and guidance of other personnel relating to telemetry, 12-lead EKGs, Events, Holters and MCTs.
Essential Functions
Serves as EKG technician and monitor tech and can perform all duties related to these roles. Responsive to requests for assistance in interpretation.
Accurately and timely documents patient information at central station per telemetry policy and enters patient information in all required logs per guidelines. Notifies Registered Nurse-Telemetry Unit or patient’s charge nurse of any change in rhythm, pattern, sudden onset of dysrhythmias and failure of equipment. Appropriately interprets and documents per policy depending on unit monitored, continuously during Code Blues and arrests and/or as needed with accurate identification of rhythm and signature. Assures appropriate hand off communication to relieving Monitor Technician/ nurse. Demonstrates legible handwriting and appropriate electronic rhythm capture. Processes EKGs in archive system to ensure EKGs are matched to the correct order and assigned to physicians to be read.
Conducts rhythm interpretations, demonstrating exceptional dysrhythmia recognition skills. Accurately measures PR interval, QRS duration, ST segment, heart (atrial/ventricular/ paced) rate/regularity, P wave presence and similarity and P:QRS ratio and records per policy. Demonstrates correct use of calipers/electronic calipers. Adjusts size of rhythm trace when appropriate.
Education, Training, and Experience
High school education or equivalent or GED
Must complete the Navicent Health EKG equipment operation and monitoring, cardiovascular telemetry equipment operation and monitoring, and basic cardiac rhythm training and examination within six (6) weeks of selection or hire. Experienced monitor techs may take the examination immediately and exempt the additional training if successful passing grade is achieved. Thereafter, must validate competency in these areas annually.
OR current AHN employee will have one year of excellent AHN work history.
Proof of current Basic Life Support completion through AHA or ARC (Pediatrics and Adults) or obtain within first 6 months of hire. Thereafter, must renew biennially.
Technical certificate in electrocardiographic technology or equivalent in other healthcare training (e.g., cardiovascular technology, nursing, echocardiography, or medical assistant) from an institution accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges or equivalent accreditation commission preferred.
