Overview

We are a team of 6 Genetic Counselors and 11 Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians and have 3 offices in the Charlotte area. These include Concord, Charlotte, and Pineville. We collaborate with other genetic counselor teams in the local system, including pediatrics, cancer/hematology, cardiology, and hospital sendout laboratory. We are part of Advocate Health, the third-largest nonprofit integrated health system in the U.S with 150,000 teammates. Wake Forest University School of Medicine serves as the academic core for the system and a new medical school in Charlotte opens in 2025.

The open position is 40hrs a week providing preconception and prenatal Genetic Counseling services. This position will require some travel in the local area, such as coverage at our Concord (up to 50%) and Kenilworth offices, and a possible new location in the near future. Virtual genetic counseling services may be included. We are looking for someone who is eager to learn, flexible, can work as part of a team and independently, as well as have excellent organization and communication skills. 

Job Summary

Assists in the planning, development and implementation of clinical practice, research and education in the area of human/clinical genetics.



Essential Functions
 

  • Assesses, plans, and manages medical, psychological and social problems for a specialty patient population.
  • Acts as liaison with health care professionals for inquiries and referrals and communicates clearly with patients/families.
  • Maintains accurate case records for each referred patient and documents fully, accurately and appropriately in the medical record.
  • Initiates, designs and conducts formal and informal education programs for physicians, genetic counseling students, other health professionals, and the general community.
  • Plans, develops and implements programs, policies and procedures within the area of human/clinical genetics.
  • Monitors and integrates new technologies, theories, and community resources.

 

Physical Requirements
 

 

Walking, standing, sitting, lifting, teaching, bending, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 50 pounds in handling of patients and medical equipment and supplies. May be exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials. Must have intact sense of sight, hearing, speech, touch, and finger dexterity.



Education, Experience and Certifications
 

Master's of Science in Genetic Counseling or related field required. Two of more years experience as a Genetic Counselor. Board Certification as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
