Overview

Job Summary

Performs nursing care and assists with planning and implementing care for the comfort and well being of the patient/resident. Functions under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Administers medications to include oral and sublingual agents, topical agents, subcutaneous, intradermal, and intramuscular medications, safely and per policy. Must be available to provide nursing services in all patient care area of expertise and knowledge, at all elected locations.



Essential Functions

  • Possess the specialized knowledge and clinical skills necessary to provide care for people with physical disability and chronic illness.

  • Performs nursing care for the comfort and well being of the patient/resident.
  • Administers medications to include oral and sublingual agents, topical agents, subcutaneous, intradermal, and intramuscular medications safely and per policy.
  • Assists with admissions and discharges. Assist physicians as needed with rounds or procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform infusion of various intravenous products.
  • Performs IV therapy to include the peripheral and central venous route.
  • Prepares IV fluids for administration, changes IV tubing, and adjusts IV rate.
  • Administers IV medications via secondary route and/or intermittent device, with the exception of investigational drugs.
  • Administers IV push pain and nausea medications.
  • Changes dressing to the peripheral/central venous IV sites, and implanted ports.
  • Performs venipuncture to obtain blood samples or start IV’s (when competency is completed).
  • Discontinues IV therapy and removes IV catheters that do not exceed 1 ½ inches in length.
  • Administers blood/blood products as witnessed by a RN.
  • Observes, reports, documents signs of injury, infiltration and/or inflammation at the injection site.
  • Assists with complex sterile procedures.
  • Performs charge nurse or term leader duties as necessary making rounds to determine level of standards or patient/resident care, environmental safety and delegate tasks of CNAI and CNAII.
  • Documents observations, treatment, and patient response to treatment/therapy/nursing care.
  • Assists RN with development/revision of the treatment plan.
  • Reports patient/resident care conditions and concerns accurately in the shift report to supervisor, family and/or physician.

 

Physical Requirements
Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stopping, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 51 pounds in handling patients, residents, medical equipment, and supplies. Understands and speaks fluent English. Must have intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, and touch, finger dexterity, critical thinking and ability to concentrate. Must be able to respond quickly to changes in the patient and/or unit conditions.



Education, Experience and Certifications

High School diploma or GED required. Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing required. Current North Carolina LPN licensure required. BLS required per policy guidelines. 3 years nursing experience in an acute care or rehabilitation facility required. Must have demonstrated leadership qualities, supervisory skills, interpersonal relationship skills, and knowledge of federal and state regulations governing clinical care, nursing practice, and leadership.
