Overview

JOB SUMMARY

Under limited supervision, the database design engineer/administrator designs, develops and implements database applications to accommodate a variety of user needs. Analyzes and determines informational needs and elements, data relationships and attributes, proposed manipulation, data flow and storage requirements and data output and reporting capabilities. Installs, implements and supports systems within the user base. Performs system level database maintenance. Makes recommendations for and implements database software upgrades.  This position is within the Airways Disease Research Center.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree with computer courses and four years of directly related experience in database administration or computer programming, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a research environment preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Installs, implements and supports multi-user relational database platforms(s) (including test, development, QA, and production environments), including installation and updating of relational database management software.
  2. Implements database level security measures to ensure the security of all data, including user account management, database schema management, user access control, and database level encryption. Adheres to local and national requirements (ex. FIPS 142.x) for data security when required.
  3. Maintains performance, backup, and recovery for a large number of databases to ensure efficient and error-free processes. Creates and maintains databases, tables, views, stored procedures, triggers, etc.
  4. Analyzes server performance metrics, server logs, identifies unusual activity and determines and recommends improvements to both hardware and software parameters to improve performance.
  5. Plans and executes server migrations as new versions of relational database products are released.
  6. Provide technical guidance to programmers regarding recommended database solutions.
  7. As needed, designs, develops and implements database applications to accommodate a variety of user needs. Analyzes and determines informational needs and elements, data relationships and attributes, proposed manipulation, data flow and storage requirements and data output and reporting capabilities.
  8. Defines logical attributes and inter-relationships and designs data structures to accommodate database production, storage, maintenance and accessibility.
  9. Tests designed applications utilizing database management software or general programming software.
  10. Attends project and/or departmental meetings and makes contributions to the project design regarding data management needs. Consults with users on project design needs. Maintains a professional relationship with project and departmental personnel. 
  11. Assists with data transmissions and data conversions, and importing and exporting data from a variety of sources.
  12. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Experience with database system and programming languages to be utilized by the department
