Overview

The Pharmacy Intern is supervised by a licensed pharmacist and is involved with the preparation, dispensing, and distributing medication to patients.  While being supervised, the individual may engage in all activities related to pharmacy practice. Additionally, opportunities to observe clinical pharmacists will be offered to interns during their available hours, subject to staffing availability.

How You’ll Impact Patient Care:

Under the general guidance of a pharmacist, the pharmacy intern undertakes the responsibilities of a pharmacy technician, including tasks such as fulfilling medication orders, delivering medications, compounding both sterile and non-sterile preparations, and gathering medication history. Additionally: 

  • Provides pharmacy services to patient care areas and customers.
  • Review and interpret prescriptions for both inpatients and outpatients to ensure the appropriate use of medications, under pharmacist supervision. 
  • Communicates with and seeks guidance from physicians regarding various medication-related matters such as drug selection, dosage, dosing intervals, drug allergies, and potential drug interactions, under pharmacist supervision. 
  • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, may counsel patients as necessary.
  • Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships, and team building. 

What You Will Need 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and current enrollment in an accredited College of Pharmacy required.
  • A pharmacy intern does not require a license from the Board of Pharmacy, but all interns seeking practical pharmacy experience toward licensure as a pharmacist must register with the Board's internship program on forms provided by the Board.
