Overview

JOB SUMMARY:   

The rank of Assistant Professor is awarded to instructors who have shown significant growth in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service in the higher education setting, with primary emphasis given to growth in teaching. The Nursing Assistant Professor is expected to maintain current knowledge of the professional discipline and educational methodologies through continuing professional development and pursuit of scholarly activities, and to work closely with the Program Chair in advancing the mission of Cabarrus College. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Teaching: The assistant professor’s primary responsibility is to teach and facilitate student learning.  Teaching activities may occur online or face-to-face in a classroom, clinical, lab, or fieldwork setting. Assistant professors are expected to:

    • Devote preparation time for instruction.
    • Utilize a variety of active learning strategies, including but not limited to cooperative learning, service learning, reflective writing, and experiential and problem-based learning.
    • Utilize a variety of assessments appropriate to different learning styles.
    • Appropriately and effectively utilize instructional technology.
    • Demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject matter and provide current, relevant content.
    • Challenge students to think critically and perform at high standards of competence.
    • Promote active class discussion.
    • Provide opportunities for students to acquire awareness of cultural diversity.
    • Maintain and promote clinical, lab, and classroom safety.
    • Pace instruction to maximize student learning.
    • Provide constructive feedback and remediate as appropriate.
    • Compare and contrast information, perform math calculations, and analyze and examine data.
    • Hold students accountable to the Student Code of Conduct.

Curriculum Development: Cabarrus College faculty are responsible for building degree programs that embody coherent courses of study and allow students to progressively build upon and integrate their knowledge and skills.  Assistant professors are expected to:

  •  
    • Annually review syllabi and update student learning outcomes, course content, teaching strategies, learning activities, textbooks, and other supplemental resources.
    • Participate in departmental review and revision of curriculum scope and sequencing.
    • Incorporate into the curriculum recent research, standards of practice, and changes from within the discipline, profession, and accreditation standards.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Documented evidence of high level of competence in teaching and teaching related activities.
  • Baccalaureate Nursing: Minimum of a master’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university required, doctorate preferred. Completion of a certificate program in nursing education or nine semester hours of education course work or a national certification in nursing education required. Current or eligible North Carolina RN license required. At least two years full-time nursing clinical experience required.
  • At least three years full-time instructional experience required. Two years online experience preferred.
  • Documented service to one’s community, profession, and College.
  • The degree requirement may be waived by the College upon demonstration of appropriate professional training, competence, or experience.
