JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Associate Dean, Research Oversight serves as the faculty leader of regulated research oversight functions, including Conflicts of Interest, Research Integrity and Responsible Conduct of Research.  This role serves as the Wake Forest University School of Medicine’s lead on broad administrative issues and decision-making, ensuring operational and regulatory compliance with federal, state, and local requirements. The Senior Associate Dean works with the Associate Vice President and Assistant Dean, Research Oversight and Support, to develop and maintain processes and practices that fulfill institutional responsibilities and ensure appropriate oversight of research-related activities. This role oversees institutional processes and works closely with legal counsel, senior leadership and research oversight staff to ensure appropriate operational approaches are in place to respond effectively to review requests or concerns related to conflicts of interest and research integrity. In addition, the Senior Associate Dean promotes Responsible Conduct of Research and facilitates appropriate training and a culture of high quality, compliant research practice throughout the institution.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Communicate effectively across departments to promote a culture of research excellence and compliance.
  • Oversee the investigative process for allegations of research misconduct or conflicts of interest and ensure the coordination of appropriate responses and corrective actions in accordance with institutional policies and federal regulations.
  • Chair or serve on relevant committees related to research integrity and conflicts of interest, providing leadership and guidance on policy development and decision-making.
  • Periodically assess policies and processes related to research integrity and conflicts of interest and develop strategies to mitigate risks and strengthen compliance efforts.
  • Monitor compliance with institutional policies and external regulations related to research integrity and conflicts of interest for conflicts of interest reviews and research integrity activities. 
  • Serve as a key faculty advisor to researchers, faculty members, and administrative staff on matters related to research ethics, conflicts of interest, and compliance issues.
  • Stay current with evolving regulatory landscapes and advise on potential impacts to research operations.
  • Facilitate the development and dissemination of educational programs and training sessions for faculty, researchers, and staff to promote awareness of research ethics, conflicts of interest, and regulatory requirements.
  • Interact with federal oversight agencies as needed.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a research compliance.
  • Experience in research and research regulations
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Experience leading or serving on regulated committees (e.g. Conflicts of Interest, Institutional Review Board, Institutional Animal Care and Committee, and/or Research Integrity Committees).
  • This position involves .5 FTE for research oversight activities and .5 FTE for clinical research and/or teaching activities.
