Overview

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides clinical leadership and supervises all medical directors within the hospital. The CMO also provides clinical leadership to all members of the medical staff at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The CMO has direct responsibility for care coordination which includes utilization management and case management. The position is directly responsible for leading quality and safety efforts within the hospital in coordination with performance improvement, quality, safety, and infection prevention. The CMO, in consultation with the market CMO and hospital president, is responsible for ensuring that services provided are in accord with the institution’s mission, vision, values and goals. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Board certification (or the equivalent) in their specialty.
  • A respected clinical physician with outstanding professional credibility and personal integrity.
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience in clinical quality and safety
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to and interest in the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability for teamwork and collaborative problem-solving using an analytical and systematic approach.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to provide leadership to physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Training in or commitment to completing training in LEAN management principles

GENERAL PRINCIPLES

Influence, embrace, and communicate operational, quality and safety goals, standards, initiatives, and improvements to members of the medical staff. Identify the obstacles to achieving these goals. Communicate with and request the help of leadership in removing the obstacles as needed. Partnership with nursing leadership and close collaboration with other relevant leaders is expected.

The Chief Medical Officer is also expected to:

  • Serve as a model of professionalism and efficiency for all providers and staff
  • Foster a collaborative, positive environment
  • Demonstrate commitment to inclusion, communication, collaboration and team work
  • Engage in the AH- WFBH culture of continuous process improvement 
  • Engage in regular, collaborative leadership rounds in clinical areas within AH WFBMC
  • Seek coaching from and be receptive and responsive to mentoring. This includes engaging in continual personal growth & development as a leader
  • Coach for and demonstrate A3 thinking
  • Employ Lean principles in concert with the Chief Nurse of AH WFBMC as well as quality and safety leadership to coach, lead and support achievement of AH - WFBH goals in access, quality, safety, patient experience, faculty & staff experience, and financial strength.

SPECIFIC POSITION DUTIES

In addition to the above duties, the Chief Medical Officer will provide direct leadership in the following areas:

  • Assure compliance with performance measures as outlined by the Joint Commission
  • Identify and collaboratively act on areas needing improvement 
  • Assure compliance with regulatory and external mandates 
  • Lead the Medical Executive Committee of AH WFBMC
  • Perform clinical case reviews in conjunction with quality and safety teams 
  • Participation in CMO call rotation and daily tiered huddle infrastructure
  • Collaborate with physician leadership, other clinical services, medical center (or market/regional/enterprise) leadership, nursing, case management, and pharmacy to ensure the highest quality, safest and most efficient patient care
  • Participate in regional committees focused on clinical quality as needed
  • Participate in regular meetings with nursing and medical leadership to improve the quality and safety of care provided to patients.
  • Educate AH WFBH providers as needed on all aspects of clinical care and professionalism

CURRENT COMMITTEES – subject to change 

  • Lead monthly MEC meetings
  • Co-lead monthly care coordination meetings
  • Participate in monthly:
    • CMO meetings
    • Market and Regional Quality and Safety meetings
    • Quality Leadership Council meetings
    • Faculty Professionalism Council
    • SER regional committee meetings as needed
