Overview

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, the Patient Scheduling Coordinator handles patient scheduling and check-out duties, along with advanced tasks such as transaction editing, medical coding, and financial coordination.

Education/Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three years of clerical experience, including six months as a Patient Scheduling Coordinator or equivalent.
Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration:
  • Certification program completion and maintenance of accuracy standards required.
  • BCLS certification within 30 days of hire.
Essential Functions:
  1. Schedule clinical appointments using the IDX system with independent judgment.
  2. Coordinate lab work and diagnostic tests, anticipating patient needs.
  3. Prioritize patient scheduling based on urgency.
  4. Ensure all tests and paperwork are completed for patient care.
  5. Coordinate inpatient testing and manage logistics.
  6. Prepare patient charts before visits.
  7. Answer clinic policy inquiries and resolve patient issues.
  8. Train less experienced staff.
  9. Process transaction editing system files and perform medical coding.
  10. Coordinate surgeries and obtain precertifications.
  11. Handle financial duties like insurance authorization and billing assistance.
  12. Complete educational programs and attend departmental meetings.
  13. Perform other related duties as needed.
Skills/Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of third-party payer requirements and basic ICD-9 and CPT coding.
  • Data entry accuracy of 5000 kph with a 3% or less error rate.
  • Ability to work independently in a clinical setting and multitask.
  • Experience with IDX, Medipac, and LastWord.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Experience with managed care or health insurance companies.
Work Environment:
  • Well-lighted and ventilated medical office environment.
