Overview

JOB SUMMARY: This is a clinical athletic training II position, working alongside the surgeons, providers, and all other members of the Orthopedic team as patients are seen in a clinical setting. Functions as a second assistant during the surgical episode, including assisting with the surgical episode during the incision, excision, repair of pathology, and would closure. Must hold certified surgical assist credential (SA-C) or equivalent within 30 days of hire. Expert knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques preferred. Certified orthopedic technologist credential (OTC) or equivalent required. Manage care of patients, athletes and the active population. Significant percentage of time is direct patient contact and care; management and evaluation of head injuries and concussions seen in clinic. Collaboration with physicians for optimal patient care. Administrative responsibilities necessary for effective and efficient clinic flow. All duties and responsibilities performed under the supervision of a directing physician.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in athletic training from a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) program. Master’s degree preferred.  3+ years of outpatient clinical athletic training experience required. Certified orthopedic technologist credential (OTC) or equivalent required. Must hold certified surgical assist credential (SA-C) or equivalent within 90 days of hire. Phlebotomy training/certification preferred. Expert knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques preferred.

 

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Current athletic training certification by the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC). Currently licensed or eligible for a State of North Carolina License in Athletic Training within 30 days of hire.  Ability to complete American Heart Association Healthcare Provider (BLS), which includes CPR and AED training within 30 days of hire.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Provide clinical athletic training services in local orthopaedic clinics following the rules and regulations of the National Athletic Trainers Association Code of Ethics, BOC Standards of Professional Practice, North Carolina State Practice Act and Regulations for Licensed Athletic Trainers, and system-wide and Orthopaedic departmental Policies and Procedures. This position may require you to travel to local orthopedics clinic locations as needed. 
  2. Assists surgeon with patient positioning, preparation and draping. Maintains sterile operating field, cuts sutures, assists MD with tissue retraction, exposure of the operative area, suctioning, sizing and preparation of previously harvested graft-tissue, position of arthroscopic camera, and suturing skin and wound closure under supervision of the physician.
  3. Prepare and assist the physician with injection procedures done in the office. Provides proper post-operative wound care and education, removal of sutures and dressing changes to post-surgical patients as directed by the attending physician. Develops and implements patient management plans, assists in provision of continuity of care from offices visits through surgery if necessary as well as therapy needs. Perform cast and/or durable medical equipment (DME) application and removal.
  4. Performance of a thorough medical history on each patient, including; a thorough history of the injury or condition, primary complaint, pain level assessment, past medical history, review of medications and allergies, and how quality of life is affected. Performance of an appropriate physical examination on each patient seen, including; range of motion testing, strength testing, sensation testing, palpation, functional testing, ligamentous testing, and special tests as needed.
  5. Order diagnostic studies under the direction of a physician, including; radiographs, MRIs, EMG studies, CT scans, diagnostic ultrasounds, rehabilitation referrals, and physician referrals.
  6. Serves as a link between patient and physician during patient care. Performance of educational responsibilities in specific to the needs of each individual patient, including; exercise instruction and demonstration and answering patient questions in regards to the treatment plan, surgery, rehabilitation and future care.
  7. Documentation of each patient visit following all outlined guidelines in the electronic databases to include history, physical exam, diagnostic test results, impression, plan, and patient learning.
  8. Complete administrative/clerical responsibilities necessary for effective and efficient clinic flow, including; completion of FMLA or short-term disability paperwork specific to surgery; assures chart availability/preparedness for surgery and clinic follow-up. Assure a timely response to patient phone calls. Handles general office duties and any other tasks assigned by the physicians or practice manager.
  9. Assist with physician research projects and demonstrate progression on specific projects.
  10. Provides support to the physician with concussion testing (baseline and/or post-injury), and maintains necessary training on concussion education, management, and care.
  11. Maintain confidentiality (HIPAA) in matters relating to patient records.
  12. Monitor and manage supply inevntories accourding to the needs of the clinic.
  13. Clean and stock exam rooms with required supplies.
  14. Adheres to departmental dress code when providing on-site Athletic Training services.
  15. Participates in professional growth and development related to the field of sports medicine to further his/her knowledge and maintain competencies required for the position and specific unit/ area(s) of assignment. 
  16. Assist with planning, organizing, implementing and compliance of departmental and policies.
  17. Perform other related clinical duties as required incumbent to State Board of Medicine/ Board of Athletic Training Statue and Rules.
