AirCare Flight Paramedic, Ground Transports (High Point base), Full-time 12 hour nights 

JOB SUMMARY:  The Flight Paramedic functions as an integral member of the AirCare flight team along with an RN or second Flight Paramedic providing the highest level of direct patient care in accordance with the Critical Care Paramedic scope of practice as defined by the North Carolina Medical Board and with the approval of the Medical Director. The Flight Paramedic performs a variety of critical care activities across various practices settings and patient populations. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  Paramedic certification from an accredited certified paramedic program or an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in paramedic studies.  Three years of Paramedic Level experience is preferred.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:  Certification as National Registry Paramedic and North Carolina Paramedic required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) & Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NPR) required within one year. Completion of Critical Care Paramedic Course (UMBC or Equivalent) or Flight Paramedic Certified (FPC) within one year from date of hire and maintained for the duration of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Respects patient rights and confidentiality and complies with all HIPAA and Atrium policies and guidelines with respect to patient confidentiality.
  2. Completes a systematic, rapid primary assessment and a prioritized secondary survey to prioritize patient needs and utilize advanced skills to manage these needs including management of difficult airway, Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI) intubations), needle decompression of tension pneumothorax, Surgical cricothyrotomy, central line placement (EJ), administration of blood products, and intraosseous line placement.
  3. Interprets Lab results and implements any needed interventions as well as performs 12 Lead EKG to diagnose presence of Myocardial Infarction and implement emergency treatment including activation of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
  4. Operates advanced medical equipment including invasive monitoring, mechanical ventilators, Intra-aortic Balloon Pumps (IABP) and the Impella Heart Pump in the hospital and transport environment. Ensures all medical equipment is functioning; restocks medical supplies as needed. 
  5. Monitors patients and maintains records using patient monitoring system and electronic health records. Documents patients' status, delivery of care and evaluation of the patients' response to care according to specific procedures and established protocols 
  6. Communicates effectively to promote sharing of information throughout the continuum of care and as an effective member of the healthcare team. 
  7. Attend initial and annual aircraft safety training and diligently promote and maintain a safe environment for fellow aviation crewmembers, the patients, assisting agencies, and ancillary personnel. Utilize flight physiology concepts during administration of patient care.
  8. Participates in AirCare performance Improvement activities.
  9. Administer medications and IV solutions safely, correctly and per policy.
  10. Maintains clean environment to include base and maintaining vehicles in a mission ready status. Accountable to check and verify established minimum transport vehicle supply levels, restock and clean at the beginning of the shift and as needed throughout the shift.
  11. Maintains an understanding of ethics as it relates to providing primary care evaluations and access across the spectrum of the patient population. 
  12. Performs and maintains competency for point of care testing as assigned, ensuring compliance with AHWFB Point of Care policies and with applicable state and federal regulations.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: 

Ability to provide direct and indirect patient care

Strong oral and written communication skills

Ability to work collaboratively and autonomously

Ability to evaluate and appropriately respond to verbal and nonverbal communication from patients in diverse stages of development, i.e. pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.

Builds/establishes rapport with Hospital and EMS personnel, patients, and visitors

Ability to lift patients into aircraft and carry supplies and equipment into hospitals or onto scenes 

Communicates clearly, concisely and professionally via telephone and other automation devices

Computer skills for electronic documentation of all patient care provided

Willingness to learn additional skills needed to provide effective home care (Urinary catheter insertion, indwelling port access, Suture removal, PICC Line access, etc.)

Performs duties in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, local ordinances, established policies, procedure and protocols 

Safely operates a vehicle in accordance with all traffic laws while carrying out assigned duties.

Demonstrates high-level teamwork with referring agencies and other members of the AirCare team

Driving in all weather conditions

May be exposed to extreme heat or cold
