Overview

Job Summary

Develops and implements comprehensive cancer focused educational and awareness programming in a community setting. Works closely with internal and external partners to identify and meet cancer education and prevention needs within identified communities in effort to mitigate cancer risk and identify disease at an early, treatable stage. Executes community programming with a specific sensitivity/cultural competence to the unique needs and circumstances of medically underserved populations across the catchment. Builds access equity connections beyond the oncology/health spectrum, through targeted assessment and resource navigation to ensure on one is lost to follow-up.

Essential Functions

  • Develops educational awareness programs specific to the needs of the cancer center catchment area.
  • Plans and implements oncology specific community-based education programs, including needs assessment, background research, and determination of goals and objectives.
  • Responds directly to any public inquiries with questions relevant to the program.
  • Develops and maintains bi-directional relationships with various community partners in support of program activities.
  • Supports the coordination and direction of special events sponsored by the cancer centers such as workshops, seminars, promotional activities, and educational programs.
  • Assists in the development, utilization, and distribution of printed and audiovisual materials.  Attends, engages, educates, and connects individuals for access opportunities through community health fairs.
  • Provides patient navigation to community resources across the social determinants of health spectrum as needed for comprehensive patient care.
  • Represents department on internal and external workgroups, advocacy groups, or other mission related efforts.
  • Completes data entry and tracking of patient encounters, community education, and other program information.
  • Makes patient referrals for cancer screening, tobacco cessation, and other clinical needs as needed.
  • Participates in intern recruitment, onboarding, and oversight.

Physical Requirements

Works largely in community settings but could include work done in in patient care areas, clinical, and office areas. Work requires walking, bending, standing, and sitting. Must be able to move and transport event materials to community locations as needed. Requires critical thinking skills, concentration, and the ability to respond quickly in stressful situations.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Public Relations, Social Work or Nursing required. 2 years of experience in health education or population health required. Valid state vehicle operator's license. Bilingual Spanish highly preferred. 

Patient Population Served

Demonstrates knowledge of the social determinants of health and a commitment to providing resources for medically underserved populations. Demonstrates the skills and competency appropriate to care for the varying ages, culture, developmental stages, and special needs of the patient population served. Oncology experience and bilingual skills preferred.
