The clinical lab tests performed are labor intensive at the bench and the scope. Testing is high complexity and still a very manual process. This person will do everything from picking up samples, input data into EPIC, setup specimens, harvest specimens, drop and probe, analyze at the microscope using correct ISCN nomenclature, and capture and karyotype. They will also be involved in QC, QA, QI, the CAP, and continuing education. Training of residents, genetic counselors, and undergrad students is also required. They will be involved with routine lab maintenance, function, and inventory control.

Perform both routine and STAT non-waived high complexity laboratory tests in the Molecular Pathology labs of the Department of Pathology at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Provide services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory areas. Microscopically analyze, count, print and summarize analyses on amniotic fluid, chorionic villi, blood, bone marrow, solid tumor, and various other tissue specimens using Applied Spectral Imaging software. Involvement in QC, QA, QI, the CAP, and continuing education. Training of residents, genetic counselors, and undergrad students is also required. They will be involved with routine lab maintenance, function, and inventory control.

Education/Experience/Certifications to Qualify: 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science, or equivalent

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform both routine and complex non-waived high complexity laboratory tests in the Medical Genetics labs of the Department of Pathology

 

  1. Prepare solutions as needed for all processes in the laboratory 

 

  1. Supply physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results

 

  1. Provide services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory areas

 

  1. Initiate and maintain short/long term cell cultures, harvest specimens, and perform various banding/staining methods; experience with chromosome, FISH, and microarray samples for constitutional and neoplastic specimens is a plus

 

  1. Ability to recognize human chromosome banding patterns using visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail providing analysis using ISCN standards

 

  1. Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required

 

  1. Microscopically analyze, karyotype, print and summarize analyses on amniotic fluid, chorionic villi, blood, bone marrow, solid tumor, and various other tissue specimens using Applied Spectral Imaging software

 

  1. Perform and document quality assurance, quality control, and equipment maintenance, recognizing problems, identifying causes, and determining solutions

 

  1. Communicate results to laboratory directors, physicians, and other technicians

 

  1. Data handling and input, answering phones and customer requests, and perform other related duties incidental to work described herein

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Clinical laboratory environment. Exposed to risk of bloodborne/airborne disease.
Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection). May be exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens.
Moderate noise environment. Subject to injury from sharps. May be required to work hours beyond typical 8 a.m.-5 p.m. schedule.
Will work/be on call rotating Saturday's (7-8 per year) and work/be on call rotating holidays.
