Overview

Job Summary:

A laboratory technologist who applies clinical expertise in evidence-based laboratory practice to provide education and support to the laboratory including both students completing clinical rotations and laboratory teammates. The Lab Educator provides direct support in the creation of educational curriculum and works in collaboration with the system lab leaders, program chairs, and laboratory staff. This position requires an individual to work with a high-level of independence, be a system thinker with strong collaboration skills, excel in communication, and have a passion for creating and delivering innovative educational solutions for leaders, students, and teammates.

Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates proficiency and follows testing procedures and policies by adherence to quality assurance guidelines for equipment and work area, documenting corrective action to any non-conforming event.
  • Participates in a competency assessment program, where qualified.
  • Fosters a culture that values and recognizes the importance of teaching excellence for students and teammates.
  • Collaborates with lab leaders to deliver a new teammate onboarding experience that is inclusive, teamwork focused, and highlights our Culture Commitments.
  • Assigns and coordinates efficient training of students and teammates, delegating authority, and responsibility as appropriate to ensure training documentation is completed in a timely manner.
  • Designs, develops, and facilitates the dissemination of standard best practice training resources in response to healthcare trends, regulatory requirements, and strategic priorities of the organization.
  • Utilizes multiple education modalities and leverages use of technology to provide educational activities both on and off the bench to increase engagement and productivity.
  • Assesses learning styles and level of experience to customize training programs to provide a unique one-on-one learning experience.
  • Performs competency assessments for teammates, ensuring that all teammates meet accreditation complexity requirements prior to reporting patient results and ongoing thereafter.
  • Maintains clear, real-time communications shift-to-shift and with leadership regarding issues, concerns and problems which may affect patient care or the operation of the department.

Physical Requirements: 

Works in a fast-paced clinical environment. Works in an area which contains biohazardous (infectious) materials along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. Duties may involve standing, walking, stretching, stooping, bending, and lifting light (20 pound) to moderately heavy (50 pound) loads.

Education, Experience and Certifications: 

Bachelor’s degree required. At least two years prior experience in a laboratory setting required and 5 years’ experience preferred. MT(ASCP), MLS (ASCP), M(ASCP), MB(ASCP), HTL(ASCP) or CT(ASCP) preferred. MT(ASCP), MLS (ASCP), M(ASCP), MB(ASCP), HTL(ASCP) or CT(ASCP) required as appropriate to perform clinical testing. Teaching experience preferred. Cytogenetic experience strongly preferred.
