Overview
Job Summary: The Specialty Medical Director - Internal Medicine (Charlotte Market - approx. 200k patients and 160 providers) is responsible for providing leadership in support of the site-based medical directors and the sites within their specialty. There are 3 primary components to this role:
- Provide direct support and mentorship and are accountable for the performance of Assistant Specialty Medial Directors and/or Site-Based Medical Directors (and associated sites) that are located within their specialty. They are accountable for the overall performance of those designated sites, as well as the communication and deployment of all quality, safety & patient experience initiatives, Integrated System of Care initiatives, Strategic Growth initiatives, as well as other operational, financial and patient care redesigns. This work will require communication and coordination with colleagues in services such as Quality, Performance Excellence, Health Informatics, Patient Experience, and Operations.
- Support the Assistant Specialty Medical Directors and/or Site-Based Medical Directors in achieving seamless coordination and integration of care within their division and/or sites. This aspect of their work will focus on the vertical integration of care within their defined scope – care and care transitions across the continuum including hospital, ambulatory practices and other continuing care sites, as well as home health care, where applicable.
- Work collaboratively with their administrative counterpart to ensure divisional goals are aligned with the system goals, operational issues/concerns are addressed in a timely manner, and that strategy and tactics are executed collaboratively.
Medical Director roles that work within hospitals are also expected to interface effectively with hospital leadership and participate in all meetings and activities as requested by hospital leadership, as well as be the communication link between the service line/care division and the hospital.
Essential Responsibilities/Functions:
Deployment & Supervision of Performance (Quality, Safety, Performance Enhancement, Patient Experience, Utilization & Cost Effectiveness, Integration of Care, and Strategic Growth…) within their Specialty for all practices.
- The Specialty Medical Director is accountable for the achievement of all performance goals in their specialty
- Responsible for supervising, mentoring & supporting the Assistant Specialty Medical Directors and/or Site-Based Medical Directors in their specialty.
- Responsible for communicating relevant information regarding strategic and tactical initiatives, as well as all other relevant information to the leaders in the specialty in coordination with their co-leader (AVP or Director)
- Responsible for identifying any problems and communicating them to the Senior Medical Director and/or administrative co-leader, as appropriate
- Visits each assigned site within their specialty at regular intervals as needed to meet directly with the site-based medical director, the site-based administrators, as well as the clinicians and teammates in that site. This will require on-site observation and interaction. It is recommended that the Specialty Medical Director directly observe the ‘flow’ of the practice for their areas of responsibility.
- Review of all performance standards, goals & metrics with Assistant Specialty Medical Director and/or assigned Site-Based Medical Directors on at least a quarterly basis – more frequently if a specific site is not meeting expected performance or is experiencing other challenges.

Coordinating and Integrating Care across the Continuum within that specialty
- As stated above, the Specialty Medical Director will support his/her team in achieving seamless coordination of vertical care within their area of responsibility. This includes issues such as readmission rates, quality goals, utilization goals, patient experience goals & and other goals attached to the Care Division/Service Line, and/or Atrium Health
- Participates in strategic planning meetings, as needed, including the designated specialty-based meetings, the Care Division/Service Line meetings, and other designated Atrium Health leadership meetings.
- Assists in local clinical program development including evaluation and review of outcomes; and in the development & deployment of local resource/market allocations – identifying & resolving the needs or gaps in care within that specialty, as well as deficiencies in care coordination.
Physician Recruitment and Orientation
- Participates in the general physician/APP orientation programs as needed.
- Participate in individual physician/APP recruiting within their specialty, on the front end of the recruiting process in introducing the candidates to the organization.
- Serves as a resource for practice affiliation discussions and assists in assimilating physicians into Atrium Health
Communications
- Receives, communicates and reinforces messages (on at least a quarterly basis) from the senior leadership team of the division to specialty site-based leaders.
- Reports any challenges, problems or anticipated issues to their Senior Medical Director.
Physician Leadership and Professionalism
- Models Atrium Health values and leads by example to improve physician/APP relations within the specialty, division, medical group and system
- When necessary, assists Assistant Specialty Medical Directors and/or Site Based Medical Directors in their role as arbitrator for physician/APP concerns including serving as a mediator between peers, staff and administration
- Responsible for the supervision and the annual self-assessment process for Assistant Specialty Medical Directors and/or Site-Based Medical Directors in their specialty and within their care division/service line.
- Assist medical directors in strategic planning and execution to achieve organizational goals
Meeting Attendance
Meeting attendance at all key leadership meetings (where invited) is expected
Anticipated Time Commitment
Administrative time is approximately 60% may not be backfilled with clinical time (unless the site where the director practices has an urgent need for coverage/access periodically).
