The Department of PA Studies, Winston-Salem campus, is seeking a qualified candidate that will serve as Director of Educational Strategy and join principal faculty in the Department of PA Studies. The MMS program equips, prepares, and mentors aspiring PAs to meet the needs of our healthcare environment and diverse patient populations. Our newly initiated Doctor of Medical Science program is a post-professional doctoral degree designed by and for working PAs and equips PA leaders to shape the future of health care. 

The Director of Educational Strategy will develop and implement educational strategy for the Department of PA Studies. This role will design and implement programs to address identified needs based on stakeholder insight. The Director of Educational Strategy is also entrusted with responsibilities to oversee and/or support program assessment and drive educational research in the department, including opportunities for internal- and extramural-funded research.

  • Doctoral degree is required (PhD, EdD, or equivalent)
  • Minimum three (3) years of related professional experience, preferably in medical/PA education at an academic medical center
  • Experience with ARC-PA and/or SACSCOC accreditation preferred
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications in educational/medical education journals

An ideal candidate will have experience with:

  • Strong facilitation and executive presentation skills including an ability to engage with senior leaders 
  • Initiate and lead open conversations with teams and stakeholders from different geographies and backgrounds with a variety of vested interests
  • Excel in an intellectually intense, service-oriented environment
  • Experienced with managing timelines and deliverables across multiple projects and teams
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning theories, instructional design theory and/or outcomes-based assessment
  • Demonstrated ability to create educational content and assessment data 
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct statistical analysis, qualitative study design and analysis experience is desired 
  • Writing is of high scientific and literary quality
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience in statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS, other). 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders

As a champion for the overall success of the department and effective strategic direction, the Director of Educational Strategy will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Conduct needs assessment to identify educational opportunities, including those used for educational grant proposals or new program proposals
  • Align departmental and institutional strategic plans, mission, and vision in developing educational strategic initiatives. 
  • Provide guidance on instructional design and educational best practices 
  • Conduct and provide support to educational research, including appropriate study design, statistical analysis, and interpretation
  • Keep abreast of current trends in medical education Including the use of AI, VR, and AR in curriculum delivery and assessment.
  • Support education-based capstone doctoral projects and DMSc instruction, as needed 
  • Oversee and/or support program assessment for all programs in the department as needed 
  • Provide strategic oversight of educational research in the department in collaboration with the Director of Research and Scholarship 
  • Support the advancement of the PA Profession:
    • Advises Chair of PA Studies and other key administrators within the medical center community
    • Promotes the mission statement and the generation of goals for the department
    • Serves on various committees within the department and school, as assigned.
    • May serve in local, regional, national and/or international committee or leadership roles
    • Engages in community, regional and national activities to promote and advance the PA profession
