Overview
Position OverviewThe Department of Cardiology at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is seeking a highly motivated physician for a Non-ACGME Preventive Cardiology Instructor position. This role is designed for individuals who have completed training in Internal Medicine and are seeking additional expertise in preventive cardiology, lipidology, cardio-metabolic disease management, and cardiovascular risk reduction strategies. The position will involve a combination of clinical practice, teaching, and research opportunities, with the goal of preparing the individual for a leadership role in preventive cardiology.
Clinical ResponsibilitiesThe instructor will initially work under direct supervision from Cardiology faculty members but will progress to independent practice over time.
Ambulatory Care• Provide multiple half-day sessions of outpatient preventive cardiology clinic per week, with a focus on managing high-risk primary prevention and secondary prevention patients.
• Conduct comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessments, lipid and lipoprotein management, hypertension control, and diabetes management in the context of cardiovascular risk reduction.
• Utilize advanced imaging modalities, such as coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring and carotid ultrasound, to refine risk stratification.
• Manage complex dyslipidemia, including the use of novel lipid-lowering therapies such as PCSK9 inhibitors, inclisiran, bempedoic acid, and Lp(a)-lowering therapies.
• Engage in shared decision-making with patients regarding statin therapy, lifestyle interventions, and adjunctive therapies.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team consisting of cardiologists, advanced practice providers (APPs), pharmacists, and dietitians.
• Supervise and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows during both ambulatory and inpatient rotations.
• Provide lectures and case-based discussions on topics such as advanced lipid management, cardiovascular risk assessment, and the evolving landscape of anti-inflammatory therapies in CVD prevention.
• Participate in the development of continuing medical education (CME) activities and quality improvement initiatives related to preventive cardiology.
• Opportunities exist for engagement in clinical research and epidemiologic studies related to preventive cardiology, including the utilization of national and international datasets such as the MESA Study, UK Biobank, and other cardiovascular cohorts.
• Involvement in ongoing clinical trials related to novel lipid-lowering agents, inflammation reduction in atherosclerosis, and the impact of lifestyle interventions on cardiovascular outcomes.
• Present research findings at national and international conferences, including AHA, ACC, NLA, and ASPC meetings.
• Collaborate with faculty on the development of guidelines and consensus statements in preventive cardiology and lipidology.
• M.D. or D.O. degree required.
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency.
• Strong interest in preventive cardiology, lipidology, and cardiovascular risk reduction.
• Active North Carolina Medical License (or eligibility) required.
