Health Information Management Tech II

40 hours per week

Schedule: Sunday - Thursday, 4 am - 1:00 pm

JOB SUMMARY: HIM Tech II is responsible for maintaining the quality, accuracy, accessibility and security of both paper and electronic medical records.  Position functions independently with regards to organizing and managing health information data.  Position will perform quantitative and qualitative reviews to research and resolve document imaging or medical record errors.  Position verifies internal and external requests to ensure compliance with state and regulatory rules and laws as well as Medical Center policies and procedures.  Requires excellent customer service skills to deal directly with patients, families, providers, third party payers and administrative staff across the organizational system.   

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  High school and two years’ experience in HIM/Medical records, data entry or customer service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate’s degree preferred. Data entry experience and experience with healthcare information systems preferred.  Knowledge of medical terminology, database application, spreadsheet, word processing experience preferred.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:  RHIT preferred. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Operates and utilizes the OnBase applications for batch scanning, release of information, and/or  MRN validation.
  2. Performs quality control on imaged documents, release packets and/or merged medical record numbers.
  3. Works cooperatively with management team and staff within the Medical Record Department assigned area to optimize output.
  4. Follows procedures to assist with accurately documenting, describing, and communicating information system errors. 
  5. Assists users with questions or concerns regarding the imaging system.
  6. Accesses EMR and/or other Hospital computer systems to accurately identify patient and encounter as necessary to perform job responsibilities.
  7. Performs qualitative and quantitative review and analysis of the electronic medical record (EMR).
  8. Assists HIM Corporate Manager with staff training needs in section.
  9. Compiles statistical and quality performance information as required by TJC, CMS and other regulatory agencies as needed.
  10. Provides support, system-wide, for releasing copies of patient records for payer audits, continuity of care, patient requests, legal requests and other such operational issues as needed. 
  11. Performs qualitative manual merges/audits necessary to meet the departmental goals and objectives.
  12. Serves as liaison between satellite offices and main campus facility.
  13. Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to examine the medical record and verify patient identity under atypical circumstances
  • Ability to organize work priorities and meet specific objectives under time constraints
