Overview
Job Summary
Provides direct leadership for the Med Surg Department, a 32-bed floor, and collaborates with other departments and other members of the health care team. The Director is responsible for the assigned unit(s) 24/7. Must utilize appropriate interpersonal/communication, change management and leadership skills. Assures financial and outcomes accountability and technical expertise, systematic performance improvement, and appropriate strategic direction for the department(s.) Responsible for budgeting, resource utilization, human resource management functions. Develops, plans, implements, and evaluates systems that improve organizational performance.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
1. Strategic Direction - • Identifies and acts on opportunities to gain competitive advantage and enhance organizational growth • Develops and updates well-defined strategic plan (goals and objectives) that are congruent with nursing organizational goals and directions. • Develops evidence-based policies and procedures that are consistently applied and support the strategic plan of the organization. • Enhances positive image of Navicent through community participation.
2. Results Accountability - • Maintains an appropriate working environment where activities are planned and scheduled as well as assures proper distribution/utilization of personnel. • Demonstrates a commitment to achieving organizational/departmental results via actions and behaviors. • Holds employees accountable for doing their part to achieve results. • Develops, communicates, implements and role models plans for ensuring compliance with internal and external accrediting/regulatory policies and procedures. • Engages in self-performance appraisal on a regular basis, identifying areas of strength as well as areas for professional/practice development. 3. Process Improvement - • Utilizes PI approach for process design and nurse sensitive indicators • Assures regulatory quality control (QC) is completed/documented in a timely manner • Uses an interdisciplinary and shared governance approach to resolving problems. Assures timely throughput patient processes via demonstration of “pull” behavior, effective/ proactive discharge planning, utilization of visual and RFID technology to enable communication and flow, monitoring and intervening to assure appropriate turnaround times.
4. Change Management – • Utilizes the change management process in implementing changes within the department, service line or organization. • Assists department/service line in adapting to changing environment while ensuring appropriate workflow and time frames. • Actively participates in communicating and preparing employees for managing change, utilizing a shared governance approach as appropriate. • Participates in pilot studies to evaluate innovative processes and techniques.
5. Interpersonal/Communication - • Utilizes and role models effective communication techniques to deliver timely information relative to quality of service, goals and vision. • Utilizes effective communication techniques through appropriate channels • Values diversity of opinions, perspectives and approaches and encourages others to do the same. • Appropriately addresses controversial issues that are in the organization's best interest. • Sets clear guidelines and expectations for staff. • Establishes effective interpersonal relationships with all members of the health care team. • Networks with peers at the local, state and national levels through membership in professional organizations. • Develops and implements customer (patient, physician, and staff) satisfaction/ utilization programs and corrective actions. • Proactively interacts with patients and families to assure care meets expectations.
6. Financial Accountability – • Participates in budget preparation • Monitors expenditures against budget/reports. Justifies and takes corrective action when appropriate. • Demonstrates understanding of budget process and utilizes appropriate resources • Promotes and integrates efficient, cost-effective patient care delivery systems. • Monitors & manages productivity to meet organizational percentile ranking as determined by the organization. • Follows procedures for completing requisitions and projects.
7. Technical Expertise -. • Demonstrates competence/technical skills in specialty area, maintaining pace with technology, evidenced based practice and current health care trends. • Assures that employees are competent in knowledge, skill and technology to provide quality care. • Shares knowledge and skills by participating in educational opportunities that address current evidence-based care strategies, technological advances, and other skills to promote quality in the delivery of services to patients. • Effectively plans, organizes, evaluates and promotes safe, therapeutically effective nursing care by demonstrating understanding of the legal scope of nursing practice as established by the Georgia Nursing Practice Act, hospital policies, professional experience and an established ANA Code of Ethics. Assures the environment is clean/presentable and that supplies/equipment are available and in working order. • Assures compliance/ improvement in National Patient Safety Goals, core measures, and other outcomes relevant for unit(s) • Maintains safe working environment for employees.
8. Leadership 11. Assists in achieving unit quality scores which meet or exceed hospital/ national average for nurse-sensitive quality indicators such as skin breakdown, falls, and others as appropriate for the unit.
Education, Training, and Experience • Must be a graduate of an approved school of professional nursing. BSN required. MSN preferred. • Minimum of four (4) years of nursing experience. Of the four (4) years of experience required, two (2) years of experience in the area of specialty is preferred. Minimum of two (2) years of previous nursing experience in progressively responsible leadership roles.
Other Job Requirements, Licenses, Certifications Current Registered Nursing License with Georgia Board of Nursing or Current Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC). Recommend certification in relevant specialty. CPR/ACLS Physical Requirements Must be able to use visual acuity to see monitor screen, computer and hard copy materials. Must be able to hear and verbally communicate in person and over the phone or radio. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time (up to 2 hours). Must be able to comprehend and learn operation of various office equipment. Must have functional range of motion of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, upper and lower extremities with a grip strength of 50-60# specific to job evaluation. Must be able to forward reach, overhead reach, bend, squat, kneel and apply proper body mechanics during the transfers and transport supplies and/or equipment using proper body mechanics. Must be able to lift up to 10# specific to job evaluation.
