Job Summary
The SPD Education Coordinator effectively works in collaboration with the Metro Director for SPD Education and Quality, and Facility Based Leadership in the planning and implementation of educational offerings, new hire, and ongoing competencies, assuring SOPS are followed, and teammate skills/practice and remediation is completed while operating within the guidelines set forth by various industry standards and regulations including, but not limited to AAMI. Ensuring processes are in place for reprocessing instruments, scopes, and devices in the ambulatory setting. The role may be called upon to consult in the acute care space at times. The focus will be on the Greater Charlotte Market with the potential to expand to Atrium Health Southeast Region over time.
Essential Functions
• Responsible for hands-on teammate training and continuous assessments of skills and knowledge retention utilizing a competency assessment tool in areas including decontamination, instrument tray assembly, sterilization processes, instrument tray sterile storage, durable medical equipment, and standard precautions to ensure patient safety and to minimize department pain points related to quality of performance. Documents all successes and barriers electronically.
• Participates in the AH SPD Career Pathway program with clinical assessment and evaluation of the students.
• Participates in a Metro approved four-week orientation / training program of new hires with and without SPD experience including a focus on the following:
-Standard Operating Procedures
-Surgical Instruments (name and function)
-SPD certification information review
• Adjusts work schedule as needed to ensure training needs for all teammates are met and supported.
• Develops and maintains schedule for continuing education, with the ability to adjust to address deficiencies within the department.
• Conducts audits of staff training records to ensure compliance with governing guidelines.
• Assists Metro Director for SPD Education and Quality with yearly competency review / audits at all Metro facilities.
• Promotes customer service, quality assurance, and performance improvement.
• Collaborates, communicates, and aligns with the AH Metro Director for SPD Education and Quality and Local Facility Leaders on standardizing and revising policies and procedures and achieving yearly goals.
Education, Experience and Certifications
• High School Diploma or GED Required
• Sterile Processing Certification Required.
• Ability to effectively function in a matrixed management hierarchy.
• Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
• 3+ Years SPD or Surgical Technology experience preferred.
• 3+ years education/ training experience preferred.
• Membership in a professional central / sterile processing organization preferred.
• Certification as an Instrument Specialist, Endoscopic Processor, or SPD Leader required after 2 years in position.
