Overview

Job Summary

Provides direct health services to patients of all age groups primarily under the supervision of a licensed physician and secondarily under advanced practice providers during a 1 year didactic and clinical fellowship program.



Essential Functions

  • Performs accurate initial and periodic medical history, physical examinations and daily assessments via rounds, noting patient's condition and needs.
  • Integrates history and physical findings with clinical knowledge to develop appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic plans in collaboration with the supervising physician, documenting such plans in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Identifies abnormal findings within an appropriate time-frame and initiates the appropriate intervention.
  • Performs a wide range of medical and/or surgical procedures appropriate to the department to which the fellow is assigned, under physician supervision.
  • Performs follow-up care, monitors progress, and communicates progress as necessary with the attending physician.
  • Provides counseling to patients and significant others related to medical condition.
  • Writes appropriate prescriptions and administers the appropriate medications. Prescribes therapies as appropriate.
  • Orders and interprets daily laboratory and radiology examinations.
  • Documents all patient encounters, records observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate manner on the patient's electronic medical record, utilizing hospital approved abbreviations.
  • Prepares appropriate discharge documentation, including specific medical instructions, patient education, referral and follow up as pertinent to the department for which the fellow is assigned.
  • Provides health care management, functioning within the policies and procedures, the guidelines of both the Nursing Practice Act and the Medical Practice Act and other regulatory agencies.

 

Physical Requirements
Requires travel between the acute care facility and the ambulatory clinics. Requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift and support weight of 75 pounds in handling patients, medical equipment and supplies. Must possess an intact sense of sight, hearing, smell, touch and finger dexterity. Possible exposure to communicable diseases.



Education, Experience and Certifications

Nurse Practitioner: Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner educational program with a Master's Degree required. Licensed by the North Carolina Board of Nursing to practice as a nurse practitioner required. Physician Assistant: Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program with a minimum of a Master's degree required. Physician Assistants must be certified by the State of North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners. BLS required per policy guidelines.
