Overview

Job Summary 

The Director of Union EMS is responsible for strategic oversight and operational performance of the agency. This role provides essential collaborative leadership to achieve desired outcomes that align with Atrium Health mission standards while adhering to contractual requirements set forth by Union County. The EMS Director assumes primary administrative authority and responsibility for the assessment, planning, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of all operational and clinical systems at Union EMS.

Essential Functions 

  • Prepares the annual budget for Emergency Medical Services. Directs the fiscal oversight of allocated resources for current and future projections to insure efficient and effective utilization of funds.
  • Prepares and maintains an official EMS System Plan for all Union County first responders and prehospital providers, in accordance with state regulations.
  • Oversees the coordination of initial and continuing education for all Union County first responders.
  • Adheres to all standards set forth and required by DEA, NCOEMS, NCDHHS, and other regulatory entities.
  • Grants necessary approval for the purchase of all drugs, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Guides ongoing processes for strategic planning within the department and participates in the same with local government entities to maximize overall success of future service delivery.
  • Directs and oversees the functional activity displayed by management teams, subordinate professionals, as well as technical and clerical personnel, ensuring strict adherence to all established laws.
  • Prioritizes optimal staffing within the department by consistently taking actions to attract, develop, and retain exceptional talent while effectively providing an environment that fosters excellence for all teammates.
  • Advances the development of innovative strategies for recruitment and retention techniques that are analytically driven.
  • Routinely serves as a primary coach and mentor for management-level staff members to provide ongoing professional development for their respective roles within the department.
  • Collaboratively manages disciplinary processes, when appropriate.
  • Appropriately prepares and submits application process requirements for grant funding from governmental agencies and administers any awards, as necessary.
  • Acts as a primary spokesperson for EMS, handles communication with public and media in strict accordance with Atrium Health policy.

Physical Requirements 

Intact senses of sight, and hearing are required. Good motor coordination is required. Normal eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity are necessary to perform duties. Work requires critical thinking and the ability to concentrate for extended periods of time. Must be able to respond quickly and appropriately in stressful situations. Duties require good physical stamina, endurance, and body mechanics which would not be adversely affected by having to lift, carry, and balance at times more than 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance). The ability to independently lift and balance equipment weighing 56.7 kilograms (125 pounds) is required. Working in extreme environmental conditions with limited resources and/or support among other emotional circumstances can be expected. Must be fluent in English language with good verbal communication skills. The ability to work effectively driving in extreme environmental conditions while fulfilling the essential functions listed above.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Bachelor's degree is required, master’s degree preferred. Previous experience as an EMS Administrator or senior manager role is required. Valid AHA BLS/CPR Certification is required. Valid NCOEMS Paramedic Certification is required. NIMS Certifications ICS-100, -200, -300, -400, -700, and -800 are required.
