Join our Neonatology Physician Assistant Fellowship Program and advance your career under the direction of experienced physicians. Where You’ll Train: 

The Dale and Karen Sisel Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Atrium Health Levine Children’s is a leading and expansive intensive care nursery in North Carolina, catering to over 700 infants annually from northwest North Carolina, southwest Virginia, and eastern Tennessee. Being a Level IV NICU, it offers state-of-the-art, individualized care for infants born as early as 22 weeks gestational age, ensuring the best chances of survival and long-term well-being. The unit's multidisciplinary team specializes in treating a wide range of congenital and acquired health conditions, such as heart defects, respiratory distress, infections, and various other neonatal issues.

What You’ll Do: 

  1. As a part of the learning process, will utilize advanced assessment skills to support the management of a cohort of patients.  Performs and documents daily assessments.  Collects and analyzes data and formulates a family-centered plan of care. Evaluates and monitors the effectiveness of the prescribed treatment plan. As a trainee, works collaboratively to communicate the plan of care and potential changes to this plan to the supervising physician and assigned Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.
  2. Demonstrates a commitment to patient safety by speaking up about safety issues and changing practices to enhance safety.  Shares errors or potential errors through system reporting mechanisms.  Demonstrates shared accountability for safe practice.
  3. Participates in the Neonatology Physician Assistant Fellowship Program educational curriculum. Participates in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate educational offerings.  
  4. Utilizes advanced knowledge and skills to provide nursing and selected medical procedures for neonates and infants.
  5. Communicates and collaborates with appropriate members of the health care team, including patient families. 
  6. Works to improve the quality of care provided to neonates.
  7. Advances the care of neonates through participation in and application of the research process. Shares knowledge on a formal and informal basis with interdisciplinary team as relates to specialty area.
  8. Ensures the continuous quality of professional services by maintaining updated knowledge and skills.
  9. Maintaining current and valid licensure to provide continuous services to prevent the spread of bloodborne and/or airborne disease(s).
  10. Ensures age/developmentally appropriate patient care is provided in accordance with Age-Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.
     

Fellow Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program; Master's Degree preferred
  • Current North Carolina Medical Board Medical License, Certified by NCCPA
  • BLS, PALS and NRP required upon orientation
