Overview

Job Summary

Assists with assessing plans, implementing, and evaluating the care of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients undergoing procedures in the IR lab.  Provides care to patient populations with more complex health issues and serves as a clinical resource to staff.  Analyzes and anticipates less predictable outcomes of interventions; mentors team in techniques and procedures used in the lab.  Anticipates problems or complications and respond appropriately.  Serves as resource person for physician regarding equipment supplies and protocols; works collaboratively with other team members in the procedural areas  to function and meet the needs of the patient and physician. Provides quality images while maintaining radiation exposure using ALARA principles.  Reviews all images for diagnostic quality prior to radiologist interpretation, records all pertinent patient history and includes with submitted images in PACS. Enters exam and supply charges upon completion of procedure.

Essential Functions

  • Assists radiologists with all Interventional Radiology procedures.  Scrubs as first or second assistant to the radiologist performing invasive procedures. Must demonstrate knowledge of sterile technique . 
  • Provides patient safety by using double identifiers for all exams and completing med reconciliation and site verification forms when applicable. Records fluoroscopy dose and/or time for patient records. Alerts radiologist if approaching critical radiation exposure levels during exam.
  • Sets up advanced radiographic equipment and formulates appropriate correct techniques to demonstrate anatomy of area of interest based on sound radiologic principles.  Reviews diagnostic quality of finished medical  images and performs any post processing of images prior to submission for radiologists’ interpretation.
  • Offers detailed explanation of VIR procedures to patients and answers questions as appropriate. Able to complete all appropriate pre-procedural paperwork required for each procedure.  Is able to assist Interventional Radiologist with pre procedural consults.
  • Is proficient in all IR procedures and required to take after hours call upon completion of orientation period. 
  • Requires a broad knowledge of products and supplies in IR and demonstrates this knowledge via table set up and ability to recognize need for additional supplies during the procedure. Responsible for product scanning and appropriate charging and billing of procedures and supplies. 
  • Performs advanced clerical responsibilities associated with acquisition, processing, archiving of patient records and charging.   Identifies and corrects problems as appropriate with all critical issues reported to the next level of authority for corrective action.   

Education, Training, and Experience

Must be a High School or GED Diploma Graduate.  Graduate of AMA, JRC or Regionally Accredited approved school of Radiologic Technology or  Cardiovascular Invasive Technology.  Experience performing complex diagnostic and/or interventional procedures preferred.

Registered ARRT (R) or RCIS or registry eligible required; Skills competency checklist completed upon hire.
